성경은 많은 부분에서 성도들에게 “~~하라” 혹은 “~~하지 마라”라는 말씀을 하고 있습니다. 그렇다보니 사람들은 성경을 읽고서 자기 행동을 그것에 맞추면 성경을 지키는 것이라고 생각합니다. 하지만 성경은 그 말씀들을 지켜서 하나님이 의롭게 여기시는 자리에 갈 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그렇다고 성경을 의미만 새기고 실질적인 행위는 준수하지 않아도 된다는 말씀은 또 아닙니다. 그러면 어떤 것인가 하면 이는 “~~하는(하지 않는) 존재가 되라”는 말씀인 것입니다.

찬양을 예로 들어보면 많은 사람들이 하나님을 찬양하는 일을 하고 있습니다. 그러다보니 ‘교회 음악’이라는 장르가 생겨났고, 때로 교회에서 찬양을 담당하던 찬양대 혹은 성가대가 그 실력을 인정 받아서 대외적으로 활동을 하기도 합니다. 찬양으로 하나님께 영광을 돌리겠다면서 연습도 많이 해서 참 듣기 좋은 찬양도 합니다. 하지만 안타깝게도 그것이 좋은 찬양은 아닙니다.

찬양이란 좋은 노래, 좋은 화성과 악기로 노래하고 연주하는 것이 아니라, 하나님에 대한 찬양이 자기 마음에 있는 사람이 그 마음을 표현하는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 찬양하는 사람이 찬양을 하면 음치라도 아름답지만, 좋은 찬양이 자기 밥벌이인 사람이 하는 찬양은 최상의 음악성이 있다고 해도 거짓입니다. ‘찬양하는 사람 = 찬양’이 아니기 때문입니다. ‘찬양하는 사람 = 다른 목적’ 상태이기 때문입니다.

이와 같이 모든 성경은 우리가 눈으로 보기에 ‘~~하라’는 말씀 같지만 본질이 그것이 아닙니다. “죽도록 사랑한다.”는 말이 죽자는 이야기가 아니고, 심청전이 바다에 몸을 바쳐야 효도라는 이야기가 아니듯, 성경도 기록된 말씀을 몸으로 삶으로 지켜낸다고 성경대로 사는 것이 아니라, 불연 듯 살지만 자기도 모르게 성경을 지키게 되는 그런 본성을 가진 사람이 되는 것이 성경을 지키는 것이고 성경대로 사는 것입니다.

나를 핍박하는 사람을 축복하려면 핍박 받고 있는 자신이 축복 중에 있다는 것을 알 때나 가능한 것입니다. 핍박을 핍박으로 아는데 어떻게 상대를 축복할 수 있겠습니까? 예수 그리스도의 심령이 자기 안에 있어서 그렇게 살다보니 예수님을 십자가에 못 박은 세상의 가치관을 가진 사람이 자신도 핍박하는 일이 자기에 일어났다고 여기면 그 상황이 축복된 상황이라는 것을 알기에 ‘저들의 죄를 용서하여 주옵소서!’ 기도하신 예수님과 같이 축복할 수 있는 것입니다. 

그렇지 않고 자기를 핍박하는 사람의 핍박이 핍박으로 느끼면 이는 이미 동일한 것을 핍박으로 여기는 사람이므로 같은 의를 가진 사람입니다. 그런 사람이 성경에 그러라고 되었으니 상대를 축복하려는 것은 기만이고 거짓이며 선지자 노릇일 뿐입니다.

즐거워하는 자들과 함께 즐거워하려면 즐거워하는 이가 즐거워하는 즐거움과 즐거움이 이유가 자기 안에도 있어야 하는 것입니다. 그렇지 않은데 즐거워한다는 것은 속과 겉이 다른 것입니다. 이것이 기만입니다. 하나님께서 중심을 보시니 이런 사람들의 즐거움을 보시면 ‘회 칠한 무덤’이라고 하시는 것입니다.

마음을 같이하여 낮은데 두라는 말씀은 앞서 믿음의 분량대로라는 말씀과 같습니다. 지혜란 의도를 아는 것이기 때문입니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 그 자리의 분량을 지혜로 순종하라는 것입니다. 각자의 믿음의 분량이 다르니 서로가 그 분량을 감사함으로 받을 때 은혜로운 것입니다. 한 사람은 믿음의 분량대로 순종하지만 어떤 사람은 높은 곳에 마음을 두고 불평하므로 자신의 삶을 주관하시는 하나님을 원망하면 마음을 같이 할 수 없는 것입니다. 물론 그런 차이가 생기면 한 사람이 십자가를 져야하는 상황이 생기므로 어떤 이는 은혜를 더 입을 것입니다. 같이 맷돌을 갈다가 들림을 받은 사람과 같이.

또 악은 무엇일까요? 성경이 말씀하시는 악은 다른 것이 아니라 하나님과 의와 뜻이 다른 것이 악함입니다. 병자를 고치실 때 “네 죄가 사하여졌노라” 말씀하신 예수님을 보고 마음으로 ‘참담한 일’이라고 비난한 바리새인들을 향해서 예수님은 <악한 생각>이라고 하셨습니다. 즉 사람이 사람의 죄를 사하는 것이 하나님의 의로움인데, 사람이 가진 의의 기준은 사람이 사람의 죄를 사할 수 없다고 믿었고 예수님은 그 생각이 하나님의 생각과 다르므로 악한 생각이라고 말씀하신 것입니다.

사실 이것은 지금도 마찬가지입니다. 예수님께서 육신으로 오신 것을 부인하면 이단이라고 말하는 교회들이 그렇게 우리와 같은 사람으로 오신 예수님을 보고서 죄 사함을 받았다고 믿으면서, 정작 사람이 사람의 죄를 사한다고 하면 아연 질색하는 것은 아직도 있습니다. 문제는 성경이 말씀하시는 <악>이 그것 하나뿐이라는 것입니다. 하나님의 계획과 다른 의로움을 사람이 가지고 있는 것, 그래서 그 의로움으로 사람이 사람과 세상을 선하고 악한 것을 심판하여 나누는 것 그 하나만이 악한 것입니다.

예수님을 믿는 믿음 안에서 십자가의 도를 알고 자기 십자가를 지고 가는 사람은 악으로 악을 갚을 수 없는 사람입니다. 십자가의 도가 다른 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 악으로 여기시는 것은 사람이 자기의의 기준으로 선과 악을 구분하는 것입니다. 그 사람들의 악함이 예수님을 십자가에 못 박았습니다. 그때 예수님께서 그 악에 맞서서 하늘의 천군천사를 부른 것이 아니라 선한 일, 곧 하나님께서 선하게 여기시는 일을 하신 것입니다. 

하나님께서 선하게 여기시는 것은 하나님께서 육신을 가진 인생에게 기대하시는 것입니다. 즉 하나님의 의를 나타내시기 위하여 자기 인생을 소비하는 것입니다. 그것이 또한 고난이고 환난입니다. 그러니 사람이 하나님께서 악으로 여기시는 악한 대접을 받는다는 것이 환난이고 고난이나, 십자가를 지고 가는 사람은 그 악함 앞에 자신을 내어 주는 것입니다. 그렇게 할 때에 하나님의 의가 나타나는 것입니다. 그것을 위하여 하나님께서 사람을 만드셨습니다. 그것이 하나님의 창조 목적이고 의도이시므로 그것이 바로 선한 것입니다. 선으로 악을 갚으라는 것이 바로 그것입니다.

예수님께서 지신 십자가를 우리도 지고 간다는 것은 의인이 죄인을 위하여 죄인이 되는 세계에 관한 것입니다. 그리스도인의 새로운 생활, 그것은 이전에는 그렇게 살지 않은 삶을 산다는 것입니다. 즉 이전에는 십자가를 지는 것과 같이 살지 않았는데, 그리스도로 인하여 십자가를 지는 삶을 산다는 것입니다. 이전에는 자신이 옳다고 여기는 것을 관철시키면서 살았는데, 이제는 자신이 옳지만 옳지 않은 자의 주장에 의하여 죄인이 되어 끌려가고 종이 되는 삶을 산다는 것입니다. 그것이 그리스도인의 새로운 삶입니다.

반대로 사람이 어떤 이에게 짜증을 내고 화를 내고 무시한다면 자기가 속한 그 가치관의 세계 안에서 자신이 이긴 자라는 생각 때문입니다. 물론 그 생각은 사실일수도 착각일수도 있지만 적어도 그런 생각 없이 사람에게 무례하지는 않기 때문입니다. 즉 자기의 의가 옳다는 것을 주장하고 관철시키는 것이 성공하였다는 위세를 보이는 것입니다.

그러나 이 모든 것은 예수님께서 지신 십자가와는 상반된 것입니다. 예수님은 하나님의 아들이시고 하나님의 말씀이 육신이 된 하나님의 본체이신데, 그 예수님보다 더 온전한 하나님의 아들이 없고, 하나님을 잘 아는 분이 없는데, 자기 기준으로 하나님을 모른다고, 하나님의 아들이 아니라고, 하나님을 모독했다고 주장하는 그 어이없는 주장 앞에서 죄인이 되신 사건이 바로 십자가의 사건입니다. 그러니 사람이 자기가 속한 세계에서 그 의로움으로 이긴 것을 자랑하거나, 주장한다면 그것은 십자가를 지고 가는 삶과는 상반된 것입니다. 다시 말해서 그리스도인의 새로운 생활이란 있을 수 없다는 것입니다. 그 삶이 설사 몸을 불사르게 내어준다고 해도 말입니다.

바울 사도가 말씀하고 있는 그리스도인의 삶, 그 새로운 삶은 그리스도로 인하여 이전에는 그렇지 않았는데 새롭게 살게 된 삶을 말합니다. 이전에는 자기 가치관 안에서 의로운 것을 주장하고 관철시키는 것이 도리며 선한 것이라고 생각하고 살았지만, 예수님의 십자가가 자기 안에서 생명이 되고 나면, 의인으로서 죄인들에 의하여 죄인이 되신 예수님의 본성과 같이 자신의 의로움을 주장하여 선을 이루는 것이 아니라, 의롭지 않은 주장 앞에서 섬기고 먼저 존경하므로 그 모습을 보는 사람의 마음 안에서 그리스도의 생명이 잉태되는 것을 보는 것입니다. 마치 자신이 예수님을 보고서 그 모습이 자신의 본성이 되어 자기 의를 주장하지 않게 된 것과 같이. 이것이 바로 그리스도인의 새로운 삶의 본질입니다.

사람이 세상을 살아감에 있어 그리스도의 생명으로, 그리스도인의 새로운 삶을 사는 것은 의지로 되는 것이 아닙니다. 훈련으로도 되지 않습니다. 그것은 삶입니다. 삶이란 생명이 있어야 하는 것입니다. 예수 그리스도의 생명이 자기 안에 없는데 어떻게 그리스도로 인한 삶을 살 수 있겠습니까? 그런 법은 없는 것입니다. 그러므로 훈련이나 신념으로 그리스도의 십자가를 지고 새로운 삶을 산다고 하는 것은 다 거짓입니다.

그러므로 그리스도인으로서 새로운 삶을 산다는 것은 그리스도의 생명이 자기 본성이 되었다는 것입니다. 이전에는 자기 의를 주장하는 사람이었지만 이제는 의로우시나 의롭지 못한 자의 주장에 의하여 죄인이 되어 십자가에 죽으시니 오히려 그 모습을 보고 죽인 자들이 예수님의 의로움을 깨닫게 되는 그 본성이 자신의 본성이 되었다는 것입니다.
