첫 번째 사사 웃니엘 – 이스라엘 백성들의 타락

이스라엘 백성들은 여호수아가 죽고 난 다음에 하나님의 명을 어기고 가나안 땅에 거하는 거민을 살려두는 정도가 아니라 그들의 딸을 자신들의 아들에게 주고, 또한 자기의 딸을 그들의 아들에게 주기까지 했습니다. 이러한 모습은 홍수 이전에 하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들의 아름다움을 보고 아내로 삼았다는 것(창 6장)과 비슷합니다.

성경에서는 이방인과의 혼인을 금지하고 있습니다. 하지만 사사기 마지막에 베냐민 지파가 멸절하게 될 지경이 되자 이방인을 데리고 와서 아내로 삼도록 했고, 룻이나 라합과 같이 아예 이방인이거나 심지어 기생까지도 예수님 혈통 안에 여자로 삼기도 했습니다. 이는 어떻게 보면 참 모순이 되는 것 같지만, 앞서서 육신으로 이방인이 이방인이 아니라고 함과 같이 육신으로 이방인과 혼인하지 말라는 것이 아니라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

그리고 그들은 바알과 아세라를 섬겼다고 했습니다. 바알과 아세라는 이방신을 대표하는 신으로 늘 나옵니다. 다곤이라는 신도 있고 기타 신도 나오긴 하나 이방인의 신, 하나님께서 싫어하시는 신이라고 하면 늘 바알과 아세라가 나옵니다. 즉 이방신을 대표하는 신이라고 할 수 있습니다. 이 바알과 아세라는 다름이 아니라 <풍요와 다산>의 신입니다. 당시 시대가 농경사회인 만큼 사람들이 풍요와 다산을 기원하는 것이 신격화 된 것이기도 합니다.

문제는 이 풍요와 다산이 어떤 것에 대한 풍요와 다산이냐는 것입니다. 그것은 바로 육신에게 필요한 것에 관한 풍요와 다산이라는 것입니다. 먹고 마시고 입고 사는 것에 대하여 풍족하기를 바라는 마음을 가진 이들이 섬기는 신이 바로 <바알과 아세라>라는 것입니다. 그러므로 이스라엘 백성들이 육신의 풍족함을 구하는 마음을 가지고 있었다는 것입니다.

그렇다면 육신이 풍족한 것이 죄가 되는 것인가? 하나님을 믿으면 가난하고 청빈하게 살아야하는 것인가? 그것이 아니라면 이스라엘 백성들이 그 마음을 하나님께 구하지 않고 이방신에게 구했기 때문에 죄가 되는 것인가? 와 같은 의문들이 있을 수 있습니다. 하지만 이 문제의 본질, 육신의 풍족함을 구하는 것의 본질은 인생의 목적이 육신의 어떠함에 있는 것으로 아는 것이 문제의 본질입니다. 그런 마음이 있기에 육신의 풍요를 바라는 마음이 있는 것이고, 그 마음 자체가 바로 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것입니다. 

예수님께서는 무엇을 먹을까 무엇을 마실지 염려하지 말로 먼저 그 나라와 그 의를 구하라고 하셨습니다. 이것은 사람이 살아가는 목적이 육신을 보존하고, 육신이 필요한 것을 잘 공급하는 것에 있는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 더 나아가서 육신으로 하나님 앞에 무엇을 하느냐가 하나님을 믿는 것도 아니라는 것을 말씀하시는 것입니다.

사람은 그 육신의 안위가 존재나 삶의 목적이 아닙니다. 육신이 풍족하게 되고, 육신이 바라는 것이 잘 이루어지도록 하는 것이 삶의 목적은 아니라는 것입니다. 이는 늘 비유하듯이 사람이 자동차를 살 때 기름 넣어주기 위하여 사지 않는 것과 같이 사람도 하나님께서 그 육신을 먹이시고 입하시기 위하여 삶을 주신 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 먹고 마시는 것을 주심은 사람을 존재하게 하신 하나님의 목적을 이루기 위함이지 먹고 마시게 하기 위함이 아니라는 것입니다.

때로 사람들은 하나님의 복음을 전하기 위하여, 또 세상 사람들이 교회에 다니는 사람들의 삶이 부유하고 풍족하게 되는 것을 보고서 하나님을 믿을 것이라는 이유로 자신들의 삶이 풍족하기를 기도하고 바라기도 합니다. 하지만 그것은 모두 하나같이 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것입니다. 또한 멀리 타국에 가서 복음을 전하는 것도 같습니다. 결국 육신의 풍요를 주시는 하나님을 전한다는 것이라면 다 같은 것이기 때문입니다. 그런 모든 것이 다 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것입니다.

바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것이 결국 육신의 풍요를 구하는 것이라고 했습니다. 그렇다는 것은 내용과 형식에서 형식을 추구하는 것입니다. 딸들의 아름다움을 보고 아들들의 아내로 삼았다는 것은 이방인이 가진 형식이 좋다는 것입니다. 육신을 추구하는 마음으로 볼 때 육신을 추구하는 신이 보여주는 결과가 좋더라는 것입니다. 그러니까 바알과 아세라라는 이방신을 섬기는 이들의 딸을 그 아들들에게 주었다는 것이 바로 이방신을 섬겼다는 것입니다.

이스라엘 백성들이 여호수아가 죽고 하나님께서 역사하심을 알지 못하게 되자 이방신인 바알과 아세라를 섬겼다는 것은, 하나님을 믿는 것이 표현된 육신의 어떠함에 있는 것이 아니라 하나님의 의가 자기 안에 생명이 되면 그 생명으로부터 행동과 삶이 나온다는 것을 믿지 않게 되었다는 것입니다. 그렇게 되니 바알과 아세라, 곧 육신이란 형식의 풍요를 신앙하는 사람들이 되었다는 것입니다.

사사 시대에 이스라엘 백성들이 바알과 아세라를 섬겼던 것과 같이 지금도 많은 사람들이 풍요와 다산을 꿈꾸고 바랍니다. 물론 이런 마음은 교회도 예외가 아닙니다. 교회는 존재의 신이신 하나님을 믿으면 육신의 삶과 바람이 풍요하게 된다고 가르치고 있다는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 하나님의 백성이라는 이스라엘이 바알과 아세라를 섬겼듯 하나님을 믿는다는 사람들도 풍요와 다산을 신앙한다는 것입니다. 그것도 하나님께 그것을 바라고 있다는 것입니다.

그런 모습이 바로 오늘 우리가 사사기를 묵상해야 하는 이유입니다. 지금 이 시대의 신앙인들이 사사 시대의 이스라엘 백성들과 같이 타락했기 때문입니다. 늘 말씀 드리는 것과 같이 ‘세상에서 성공하는 것이 하나님께 영광’이라는 가치관이 바로 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것과 같은 것이고, 하나님을 모독하는 것과 같은 것임을 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 사사기의 시작에 나오는 바알과 아세라를 섬겼다는 것, 그것이 오늘도 그렇다는 것입니다.

This is not to say that man does not buy to give oil when he is buying a car, but man does not give life to feed his flesh and to feed him. To eat and drink is to fulfill the purpose of God who made man exist, not to eat and drink.

Sometimes people pray and hope that their lives will be abundant because they will believe in God to show the gospel of God and to see that the lives of the people of the world go to riches and abundance. But it is all one serving Baal and Asherah. It is also like going to other countries to preach the gospel. In the end, it is the same if it is to convey the God who gives the abundance of the body. All that is is to serve Baal and Asherah.
