이방신을 섬기니 이방인이 괴롭히다.

이스라엘은 하나님의 백성을 상징합니다. 야곱이 하나님의 사자와 겨루어서 얻은 이름 ‘이스라엘’은 ‘하나님과 겨루어 이긴 자’라는 의미를 가지고 있습니다. 그 민족이 하나님을 섬기지 않고 이방신을 섬겼습니다. 이는 오늘날 하나님을 믿는 사람들이 하나님의 이름으로 세상에서 눈에 보이는 세계의 복을 받아 자신의 원하는 삶을 바라는 것과 같습니다. 그것이 바로 풍요와 다산이라는 이방신을 섬기는 것이기 때문입니다.

그런데 그렇게 이방신을 섬겼으면 그 이방신이 섬기는 자들을 보살피면 그나마 나을 텐데 그렇지 않았습니다. 물론 결국은 하나님의 심판을 면하지 못하겠지만, 적어도 이 세상을 살 동안은 육신이 평안하고 부유하며 성공적인 삶을 살면 그나마 나을 텐데 그것이 아니라 오히려 그 이방신을 섬기는 이방민족이 이스라엘을 쳐 들어와서 괴롭히더라는 것입니다.

사실 성경적으로 보면 이방신은 존재하지도 않습니다. 하나님께서는 스스로를 유일신이라고 하셨습니다. 신이라고 할 수 있는 존재는 여호와 하나님 밖에 없다는 것입니다. 이것은 믿음의 증거가 될 수 있습니다. 그 믿음이 온전한 것인지를 가늠하는 것이 될 수 있다는 것입니다. 귀신이나 우상을 섬기는지의 여부가 아니라, 그것이 존재하지 않는다는 것을 믿느냐는 것입니다. 

하나님이 유일신이심을 믿는다면 다른 신의 존재조차 믿지 않는 것이니 두려워할 이유도 없습니다. 귀신이나, 우상에게 절하면 벌 받는다는 두려움 같은 것은 그 믿음의 세계에는 애초부터 없는 것이기 때문입니다. 신으로 인정하지 않는데 절을 할리도 없고, 신도 아닌데 내가 믿지 않고 불손하게 군다고 화를 당할 이유도 방법도 없기 때문입니다.

사사기뿐 아니라 모든 성경에서 하나님의 백성 아니 사람이 이방신을 섬기면 이방민족을 일으켜서 괴로운 일을 당하는 것을 말씀하심은 이방신에 대하여 하나님이 약이 올라서 그런 것이 아닙니다. 이방신이 존재하고 그 이방신이 문제라면 하나님께서 전지전능하신데 그냥 다 쳐부수면 되는데 마치 사드 배치한다고 중국이 한국을 괴롭히듯 하나님께서 이방신이 아닌 이방신을 믿는 사람들에게 괴로움을 주시는 것일까요?

그것은 이방신을 사모하는 사람들의 그 마음이 스스로를 괴롭게 한다는 것입니다. 일단 여호와 하나님께서 유일한 신이시니 다른 신이 존재할 리가 없으니 그 이방신으로 인하여 문제가 될 것은 없고, 그렇다면 문제는 누가 되었든 어떤 신이든 자신을 만드신 하나님이 바라는 믿음을 가지지 않고 다른 것을 사모하는 마음이 가상의 이방신을 만들고 섬기기 때문에 그 마음으로 인하여 괴로운 것입니다.

사람이란 존재는 육신으로 살 동안의 그 삶의 풍요하여지는 것이 복을 받은 것이거나, 육신의 삶이 풍족해지는 것을 위하여 존재하게 된 존재가 아닙니다. 다시 말해서 행위나 소유의 어떠함으로 승부를 하는 존재가 아니라는 것입니다. 그런데 세상의 모든 사람들은 능력과 소유로서 가치를 가늠하고, 성공을 가늠합니다. 그리고 그 가치관이 고스란히 교회로 들어와서 세상의 가치관으로 볼 때 더 가치가 있다는 것은 하나님께서 복을 주시고 하나님께 영광이 된다고 생각하는 것입니다.

가장 쉬운 사례가 교회를 화려하게 건축하는 것입니다. 그리고 교회에 사람이 많이 모여서 큰 교회가 되면 부흥되었다고 하는 것입니다. 무엇이든 비싼 것과 커지는 것이 더 성공한 것이라는 세상의 가치관이 그대로 교회와 하나님을 믿는 신앙 안에 들어온 것입니다. 이것이 바로 풍요와 다산의 신인 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것입니다.

물론 교회에서 바알과 아세라를 찬양하지 않습니다. 하지만 자기들이 믿고 싶고, 성공하고 은혜며 복이라고 여기는 것을 하나님께 바란다는 것이 하나님을 자기 신앙의 신으로 섬기는 것입니다. 즉 하나님을 바알과 아세라로 섬기는 것입니다. 이것이 바로 하나님의 이름(정체성)을 망령되이 일컫는 것이고 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것입니다.

하나님은 하나님의 정체성 그대로 믿고 따를 때 온전한 신앙이 되는 것입니다. 하나님은 사람을 만드실 때 부자가 되게 하거나, 세상의 사람들과 세상 사람들이 가치로 여기는 것에 대하여 더 나은 자가 되는 것을 통하여 하나님을 드러내시려 하신 분이 아닙니다. 그렇다면 하나님도 세상의 법아래 종속되는 것입니다. 세상의 법에서 이기기 위하여 수고하는 신이 되는 것이기 때문입니다.

그러므로 결국 사람들이 무엇을 가치 있는 것으로 여기는지, 무엇을 본질로 보는지가 어떤 신을 섬기는 것인지를 설명하는 것입니다. 세상의 가치를 본질로 보는 사람은 하나님마저 공로와 소유의 신으로 믿게 되는 것입니다. 바로 그것을 두고 성경에서 하나님의 백성들이 이방신을 섬긴다고, 우상을 섬긴다고, 타락했다고 말씀하시는 것입니다.

사람은 하나님의 성품을 그 안에 담고서 그것이 생명의 본성이 되어 그 본성대로 살아가기를 바라셔서 하나님이 만드신 존재입니다. 하나님의 의와 뜻이 사람 안에 있으면 세상의 가치관이 아니라 십자가를 지신 예수님과 같이 그 육신의 한계 안에서, 그 연약함과 한정된 인생을 하나님의 의를 표현하기 위하여 살아가는 것이 그 본분이기에 그것을 믿고 그런 사람으로 살기를 바라면 신앙하는 것이 사람의 본질이고 하나님을 믿는 것입니다.

그런데 사람들이 그것을 버리고 세상에서 성공하는 것을 바라고, 그렇게 큰 꿈은 아니라고 해도 세상에서 살아가는 이 육신의 삶이 안정적이고 평화로운 것이 복 받은 것이라고 여기는 마음을 가지고 그것을 소망하는 마음으로 살면 항상 자기가 바라는 기준에 미치지 못하는 자기의 모습으로 인하여 낙심하고 실망하고 괴로운 것입니다. 그 실망과 괴로움이 바로 이방인의 침공을 받은 것입니다.

그러니까 성경이 말하는 이방민족의 침략이란 다른 것이 아니라, 하나님의 성품을 표현하기 위하여 창조된 사람이 존재의 신이신 하나님의 의를 표현하기 위하여 사는 것이 아니라 눈에 보이는 세상의 것이 풍족하게 될 때 하나님의 축복이라는 식으로 눈에 보이는 것을 본질로 알고서 그것을 얻기 위하여 하나님을 믿는 그 신앙은 바알과 아세라라는 이방신을 섬기는 신앙이고, 그런 신앙을 가지고 있으면 누가 뭐라 하지 않아도 자기 맘대로 세상에서 성공하지 못하는 자기 자신을 보는 그 기준이 자신을 곤고하게 하는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 하나님께서 이방민족을 일으켜서 이스라엘을 곤고케하신 본 의도인 것입니다.
