(야고보서 2:10-13) 외모로 판단하는 것은 성경을 다 어기는 것

많은 신앙인들은 ‘늘 성경 말씀대로 살려고 하지만 그렇게 하지 못하므로 반성하고 항상 깨어서 노력하고 있다.’고 말을 합니다. 참 겸손한 말로 들립니다. 하지만 그것은 전혀 겸손한 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 하나님 앞에서 자신은 아직 죄의 문제가 해결되지 않은 죄인이라는 고백이고, 구원은 아련한 것이라는 고백일 뿐입니다. 아닐 것 같습니까? 무례한 말일까요? 아닙니다. 사실입니다.

우선 성경대로 살려고 하는데 안 된다는 것은 기본적으로 성경을 육체의 행동으로 지켜내는 것이 성경대로 사는 것이라는 신앙을 가지고 있다는 말입니다. 성경대로 산다는 것은 성경에 있는 말씀들을 문자 그대로 지켜내는 것이라고 믿고 있다는 것입니다. 그리고 그런 생각으로 성경을 지키려고 해 보니 그것이 안 된다는 것을 스스로도 안다는 것입니다. 그래서 ‘그것은 어려운 것이기에 항상 노력해야 한다.’고 겸손을 떨지만 그것은 무덤에 회칠을 하는 것일 뿐입니다.

결정타는 야고보 사도의 말씀에 있습니다. 율법을 다 지키다가 어느 하나를 지키지 못했다면 그것은 율법의 모든 것을 지키지 못한 것이라고 못을 박은 것입니다. 성경을 문자 그대로 육체로 지킨다는 자체가 율법입니다.(율법을 행동으로 지켜내겠다는 것입니다.) 지키려는 성경이 구약이냐 신약이냐에 따라서 율법이 되고 복음이 되는 것이 아닙니다. 서기(예수님 오신 후) 30,000년이라 해도 신약을 행위로 지켜내려 한다면 다 율법입니다.

그러므로 야고보 사도의 말씀은 성경을 행위로 지켜내려는 신앙을 가진 사람은 성경의 어느 한 부분이라도 못 지켜냈다면 성경을 하나도 지키지 못한 것과 같다는 것입니다. 이것은 분명한 것이고, 성경을 문자 그대로 지키려고 노력하라고 가르치고 또 노력하는 사람들이 모인 오늘날의 모든 교회와 그 성도들은 모두 성경을 하나도 지키지 못한 사람입니다.

온전한 십일조를 내려고 한다면 커피 한 잔을 누구에게 얻어먹은 수익에 대한 십일조까지 내어야 온전한 것이 될 것입니다. 모르긴 해도 그것까지 계산해서 정확하게 십일조를 내는 사람은 없을 것입니다. 그러니 십일조를 온전히 내는 교인은 없을 것입니다. 또한 항상 기뻐하라고 했는데 어느 한 순간 예외 없이 기쁘고 웃고만 있지 않았다면 전 재산을 교회에 바친들, 해외에 가서 선교를 하든 상관없이 성경을 하나도 지키지 않은 것입니다. 이렇게 간단한 두 가지만 들이대도 이미 대부분의 교인들, 행위로 성경을 지키려는 대부분의 교인들은 성경을 하나도 지키지 않은 것임이 드러나는 것입니다.

야고보 사도가 이렇듯 율법의 어느 하나라도 지키지 못하면 율법을 다 어긴 것이라고 하는 것은 앞서 사람을 외모로 취하지 말라고 말씀한 것에 이어서 하는 말씀이기 때문입니다. 사람을 외모로 판단하는 것(차별하는 것)은 그리스도의 도를 어긴 것이기 때문에 그런 신앙을 가지고 있다면 성경을 모두 어긴 사람이라는 것을 말씀하시고자 하는 것입니다. 

하나님께서 같은 사랑과 의도로 생을 주신 사람을 차별한다는 것은 하나님과 다른 기준을 가져야만 가능한 것입니다. 기준 없는 차별은 없기 때문입니다. 그런데 외모가, 육신의 삶의 모양이 부자인지 아닌지를 가지고 사람을 판단한다는 것, 차별한다는 것은 세상의 기준으로 사람을 판단하는 것입니다. 하나님과 다른 기준을 가진 것입니다. 그래서 사람을 외모로 보는 것은 성경을 전혀 지키지 못한 것이라는 것입니다. 그것 하나를 어긴다는 것은 모든 하나님의 말씀을 어기는 것이라는 것입니다. 

그렇다면 왜 사람들은 사람을 외모로 취할까요?

그 이유는 바로 성경을 문자 그대로 육신으로 지키는 것을 신앙으로 보기 때문에 사람을 외모로 보는 것입니다. 자기 신앙의 기준이 ‘육신으로 무엇을 어떻게 하느냐?’이기 때문에 사람을 보는 기준이 사람의 외모인 것입니다. 만약 사람의 중심이 무엇인지를 살핀다면 당연히 사람을 외모로 보지 않을 것입니다. 중심을 보려 할 것이기 때문입니다.

그래서 야고보 사도 역시 율법을 언급하므로 사람을 외모로 취하는 것은 율법을 행함으로 지켜내는 신앙에서 비롯된 것이라는 것을 말씀하시는 것입니다. 그리고 이것을 말씀하고 있다는 것은 행함이라는 것은 그런 의미가 아니라는 것입니다. 믿음이 있으면 그것이 나타날 것이라는 것을 말씀하신 것입니다. 

그러므로 외모가 아니라 그 중심에 무엇이 있는지를 보라는 것입니다. 그리고 그것을 보려면 당연히 성경은 사람 안에 하나님의 의가 심겨서 그 의가 생명이 되어 나타나면 다 지켜지는 것이라는 것을 아는 사람이어야 그것이 보이는 것이므로 결국 외모로 사람을 판단하지 말라고 하지 않는다는 것은 자기 안에 그리스도의 도가 있는 사람이 되라는 말씀인 것입니다.
