소심한 사사 기드온

드보라 이후에 다시 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님께 범죄하므로 하나님께서 다시 이스라엘을 미디안 족속에게 붙이시므로 미디안 족속이 이스라엘 백성을 노략하니 남아나는 것이 없을 지경이 되었다고 기록하고 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님께 범한 죄는 기드온에 대한 기사가 시작된 사사기 6장에 보면 바알과 아세라 신상이 있었다는 점에서 이스라엘이 범한 죄는 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것임을 알 수 있습니다.

우리가 아는 기드온은 참 용맹한 사람입니다만 용맹하기 전에는 소심한 사사였습니다. 우선 그는 미디안 족속이 모든 것을 노략하므로 포도주 틀에서 밀을 탈곡하고 있었습니다. 들키지 않고 밀을 수확하고자 나름의 수를 생각한 것입니다. 드러내놓고 뭔가를 할 정도의 용기가 있는 사람은 아니었습니다. 또한 하나님께서 아비 집에 있는 바알과 아세라 상을 찍어 버리라고 하신 말씀도 낮에는 행치 못하고 밤에 가서 찍어 버리기도 합니다.

기드온 사사의 소심함은 나중에 하나님을 시험하기도 합니다. 양틀을 밖에 두고 이슬이 양틀만 젖도록 한 번, 다시 양털은 제외하고 땅만 젖도록 한 번 하나님을 시험하기도 합니다. 사실 알고 보면 하나님을 시험했다기보다 자기 마음에 믿음을 가지기 위한 것이라고도 볼 수 있습니다. 

그런데 왜 이렇게 소심한 사람을 하나님께서 사사로 세우셨을까? 사사는 전쟁에 나가서 앞장서서 적을 물리쳐야 하는 사람인데 이렇게 소심한 사람을 세우신 뜻은 무엇일까 하는 것입니다. 

기드온이 나중에 적을 물리칠 때 들고 간 무기는 항아리로 감춘 횃불과 나팔이었습니다. 이는 속에 있는 것을 드러내는 것입니다. 항아리 속에 감춘 횃불은 항아리가 깨어지면서 그 빛이 나타나고, 나팔은 입으로 속에 있는 공기를 불어서 소리를 내는 것입니다. 둘 다 공통적으로 속에 있는 것이 밖으로 표현되고 나타나는 것입니다.

기드온과 그의 용사들이 들고 간 무기가 그렇다는 것은 그들의 정체성이 그렇다는 것입니다. 기드온이라는 사람이 속에 있는 것을 표현해 내는 것에는 소심했지만 속에는 빛이 있었고, 또 나팔로 불어 낼 때에 하나님의 신호와 같은 소리를 낼 수 있는 호흡이 그 안에 있는 사람이라는 것입니다. 다만 그것이 어떤 것에 막혀서 드러나지 못하고 있었다는 것입니다.

기드온을 가로 막고 있었던 것은 아비의 집에 바알과 아세라의 상이었습니다. 기드온이라는 사람은 하나님의 의가 있는 사람인데 이스라엘 백성들이 바알과 아세라를 섬기므로 그 기드온의 마음이 드러나지 못했던 것입니다. 이스라엘 전체로 볼 때도 하나님께서 보실 때 큰 용사인 기드온이라는 사람이 백성 중에 있었으나 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 백성들의 모습 아래 감춰져 있었다는 것입니다. 항아리 속에 횃불이 감춰 있었던 것 같이.

기드온은 자신의 집안이 므낫세 중에서도 가장 작은 집안이고 자신도 아비 집에서 가장 작은 자라고 했습니다. 표현된 것, 겉모습은 너무 약한 사람이라는 것입니다. 기드온이 그 모습을 볼 때 자신은 전혀 하나님의 일을 할 수 없는 사람이라고 여겼습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 중심을 보시는 분이시기에 기드온의 집안이 어떤지, 그가 그 아비 집에서 몇째인지와 같은 것을 중요하지 않았습니다. 다만 그 겉모습을 깨어 버렸을 때 나타날 횃불과 같은 빛, 하나님의 음성 같은 나팔소리를 낼 수 있는 호흡이 그 안에 있다는 것만 보신 것입니다.

그런 기드온이 바알과 아세라의 상을 찍어 버리고 그것을 태워 하나님께 번제를 드리는 장작으로 써 버렸습니다. 바알과 아세라, 그 풍요와 다산의 신이 가진 안목, 풍요와 다산을 본질로, 의로움으로 보는 사람들에게는 겉모습의 어떠함이 중요한 것인데 그것을 속에 있는 빛을 비추기 위하여 깨버린 것입니다.

이는 마치 예수님께서 보잘 것 없는 목수의 아들로 와서 그 몸을 십자가에 드렸더니 하나님의 아들이라는 것이 드러난 것과 같습니다. 바알과 아세라를 깨 버렸더니 기드온이 사사로 드러났다는 것입니다. 풍요와 다산의 가치관으로 보는 것을 깨버리니 그 안에 있는 하나님의 신이 임한 사사가 드러났다는 것입니다. 

오늘날 우리도 사람을 겉모습으로 봅니다. 그리고 그 겉모습이 풍요롭고 풍족한지를 봅니다. 얼마나 크고 많은지를 봅니다. 세상이 원하는 가치관으로 볼 때 얼마나 많이 가졌는지, 더 가졌는지를 본다는 것입니다. 그러나 그렇게 보면 하나님의 사사가, 하나님의 영이 임한 심령이 드러나지 않는다는 것입니다. 신분이 목사인지, 장로인지, 또 부자인지, 교양 있는 사람인지와 같이 사람을 겉모습으로 보면 사사를 만날 수 없다는 것입니다.

그러나 하나님께서 큰 용사로 세운 사사는 그것을 깨 버렸습니다. 그랬더니 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 사람들이 발끈했습니다. 지금도 목사나 장로가 아닌 사람이 행여 어디 가서 성경을 이야기했다고 하면 발끈합니다. 신분이 미천한데 하나님의 말씀을 논하겠다고 하면 예수님 꼴이 됩니다. 십자가에 달리듯 하나님을 모독한 죄인이 된다는 것입니다. 그러나 그렇게 바알과 아세라를 신앙하는 것이 깨어질 때 비로소 사사를, 하나님의 영이 임한 사람을 만날 수 있다는 것입니다.
