기드온 전쟁의 의미

기드온이 나팔을 불어서 미디안을 칠 백성을 모았더니 32,000명이 모였습니다. 하나님께서는 모인 백성의 수가 많아서 전쟁에서 이긴 이유가 수의 많음에 있다고 여기게 된다고 하시면서 두려움에 떠는 사람은 다 돌아가라고 말씀하십니다. 그래서 돌아간 사람이 22,000명, 그리고 남은 사람이 만 명이었습니다. 

그런데 하나님께서는 이 수도 많으니 수를 줄일 것이라고 하십니다. 그리고는 남은 만 명을 물가로 데리고 가서 물을 먹는 자세에 따라 사람을 나누어 모으라고 하셨습니다. 물을 손으로 떠서 핥아서 먹는 자가 300, 그리고 나머지는 그와는 다르게 무릎을 꿇고 물을 마셨는데 하나님께서는 물을 손으로 떠서 핥아서 마신 자 300명만 남기고 나머지는 다 집으로 돌려보내라고 하셨습니다.

그렇게 삼백 명이 남았습니다. 두려움에 떠는 사람은 당연히 돌려보내고, 또한 전쟁에 나가는 사람이 경계도 하지 않는 자세로 물을 마시는 사람 역시 전쟁에 합당하지 않으니 돌려보냈습니다. 그렇게 삼백 명을 선발했습니다. 그리고 그들의 손에 들려진 것은 칼도 활도 아니라 횃불과 나팔 그것이었습니다. 그나마 횃불도 항아리에 감춘 체.

하나님께서 이 전쟁에 있어 수의 많고 적음을 분명하게 하시는 것은 뜻이 있으시기 때문입니다. 그 뜻을 이 전쟁의 적이 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 이방민족이라는 것에서 알 수 있습니다. 더 정확히는 미디안이 쳐 들어오게 된 이유가 이스라엘 백성들이 바알과 아세라를 섬겨 하나님 앞에서 악을 행했기 때문이라는 것입니다. 

바알과 아세라가 어떤 신입니까? 바로 풍요와 다산의 신입니다. 수가 많은 것이 선한 것이고 의로운 것이 되는 세계의 신입니다. 그리고 그것을 섬기는 사람은 그 세계에 속한 사람입니다. 많고 풍족한 것이 선하고 복된 것이라 여기는 사람입니다.

지금 이 전쟁은 바로 그 의와 싸우는 것입니다. 자신을 지으신 하나님을 버리고 많고 풍족한 것이 의롭고 복된 것이 되는 세계를 믿는 사람과 그 가치관이 하나님 앞에 악한 것이라는 것입니다. 그런 싸움을 하는데 하나님께서는 많음으로 이기지 않고 그 심령에 횃불과 같이 빛이 있는 사람의 빛이 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 것을 이긴다는 것을 보이시는 것입니다.

기드온이 전쟁을 코앞에 앞두고서도 이 전쟁의 승리를 확신하지 못하자 하나님께서는 기드온에게 부하 한 명(부라)을 데리고 미디안 진지 속에 정탐을 하러 가보라고 하셨습니다. 그리고는 미디안 군사에게 꿈을 주시고 그 꿈을 기드온이 듣게 하셨습니다. 그리고 그 꿈을 들은 기드온은 어쩌면 그제서야 전쟁의 승리를 확신하게 됩니다.

그 꿈은 이러한 것이었습니다. 미디안의 진지에 보리떡 덩어리가 굴러 들어와서 장막을 치니 그것이 무너지더라는 것이었습니다. 그러자 그 꿈을 들은 동료가 해석하기를 그 보리떡은 기드온이라고 했습니다. 그리고 기드온이 자신들을 다 물리칠 것이라고 말합니다. 그 말에 기드온이 확신을 하게 되고 삼백 명을 이끌고 와서 그 전쟁을 이기게 됩니다.

왜 보리떡일까요? 보리떡은 지금으로 치면 흙수저들의 음식입니다. 금수저나 세상에서 성공한 사람들의 음식이 아닙니다. 다시 말해서 풍요와 다산의 법에서 보면 실패한 사람, 풍족의 복을 받지 못한 사람의 음식입니다. 그러니까 보리떡을 먹는 사람은 풍요와 다산의 법으로 볼 때 죄인이고, 부족한 사람이라는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 기드온이라는 것입니다. 보리떡이 바알과 아세라를 훼파하였다는 것입니다.

많은 사람들은 많고 풍족한 것을 복으로 여기며 삽니다. 육신의 삶에 부족함이 없고, 자신의 뜻대로 되는 일이 많기를 바랍니다. 그러나 사람들의 그 욕심이 자기 스스로를 괴롭힙니다. 미디안이 이방인이 자기 심령 안으로 쳐 들어온다는 것입니다. 그러면 사람들은 그것을 이기기 위하여 자신이 무엇을 잘못했는지(Do)를 생각합니다. 그 잘못에는 하나님께 뭔가를 드리지 않은 것은 없는지도 살핍니다. 그리고는 그것을 고치려 더 열심히 합니다.

하지만 정작 자신을 괴롭히는 것을 이기려면 바알과 아세라를 섬기는 마음을 물리쳐야 하는 것입니다. 기드온이 바알과 아세라를 훼파하고 미디안을 물리 친 것은 수의 많음 곧 풍요와 다산으로 이겨낸 것이 아닙니다. 항아리 속에 있는 횃불로, 또 나팔로 이긴 것입니다. 이것이 오늘 우리가 받는 교훈입니다.
