에봇을 만든 기드온

횃불과 나팔로 미디안 족속과의 전쟁을 승리로 이끈 기드온은 잔당을 정리합니다. 말이 잔당이지 그 수가 15,000명이나 되었습니다. 미디안족속의 두 왕 세바와 살문나가 잔당을 이끌고 도망을 가자 기드온은 이를 좇고 그 과정에서 숙곳과 브누엘이라는 성읍을 지나면서 그곳의 방백들에게 지친 기드온의 삼백 용사에게 먹을 것을 구했으나 얻지 못하기도 합니다. 결국 기드온이 미디안의 두 왕을 잡아서 오는 길에 숙곳과 브누엘을 심판합니다.

기드온이 전쟁을 정리하는 과정에서 또 하나의 일이 있었는데 그것은 전쟁을 마친 다음에 이스라엘 사람들이 기드온을 왕으로 삼으려 했던 일이 그것입니다.(삿 8:22) 그러나 기드온은 왕이 되어 달라는 요구는 거절하고 대신에 그들의 귀에 있는 귀걸이를 요구합니다. 그리고 그 금귀걸이 1,700세겔(약 21kg정도)을 받아서 제사장의 의복인 에봇을 만들어 집에 두었다고 했습니다. 그리고 그 에봇이 기드온에게 올무가 되었다고 말씀하고 있습니다.

에봇은 제사장의 옷입니다. 이 에봇은 제사장이 우림과 둠밈의 법으로 판단할 때 입었습니다.(출 28장) 우림은 ‘옳다, 긍정’의 법이고, 둠밈은 그 반대라고 보시면 됩니다. 기드온이 사람들의 금 귀걸이를 받아서 에봇을 만들었다는 것입니다. 왕이 되어달라는 요구를 거절하고 대신에. 

기드온의 이런 모습은 잘 나가던 사사의 실수와 같은 것으로도 볼 수 있습니다. 하지만 이것은 다른 의미로 볼 수 있습니다. 귀걸이를 달라고 했다는 것은 귀를 달라고 했다는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 ‘나의 말을 들어 달라’는 의미인 것입니다. 사람들은 기드온이 왕이 되어 주기를 바랐지만 기드온은 자신은 다스리지 않을 것이니 대신에 말을 들어 달라는 것입니다. 다스리는 것은 여호와께서 하실 것이라는 것입니다.

사람들은 하나님께서 자신을 아바타나 로봇처럼 하나님의 말씀대로 따르는 존재가 되도록 해 주기를 바랍니다. 다스린다는 것을 그렇게 봅니다. 절대로 실수하지 않을 상태로 하나님께서 주관해 주시기를 바란다는 것입니다. 그래서 자신이 실수하고 범죄하는 것은 하나님께서 100% 주관하지 않기 때문이기에 하나님께 자신을 온전히 주관해 달라고 기도하는 것입니다. 기도하면 하나님께서 자신을 주관하는 것이 1%씩이라도 늘어서 그것이 쌓이면 100%가 된다는 생각을 하기 때문입니다.

그런 생각은 참 기특한 것 같지만 실상은 하나님을 엄청나게 모독하는 것입니다. 하나님 자신이 만든 피조물이 늘 부족해서 돌봐야 하는 존재를 만들고 보기에 심히 좋았다고 한 모자라는 창조주로 만들어 버리는 것이기 때문입니다. 그러나 그것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 원래 사람을 온전하게 만드셨습니다. 사람이 범죄하는 것은 하나님이 주관하지 않아서가 아니라 하나님의 말씀을 듣지 않아서, 하나님의 말씀이 사람의 내용과 본성이 되지 않아서입니다. 마징가Z나 로봇태권브이는 온전한데 단지 조종사가 타지 않았을 뿐인 것과 같은 것입니다.

그러므로 기드온은 이스라엘 백성들에게 왕을 구할 것이 아니라 하나님의 신이 임한 사사의 말을 들어 달라고 하는 것입니다. 하나님의 신이 임한 사람, 왕을 구하고 있는 이스라엘 백성들과 동일한 성정을 가진 사람이자 하나님의 신이 임한 사사의 말을 듣는 것이 여호와의 다스림이 된다는 것입니다. 즉 사람의 말을 듣는 것이 여호와의 다스림이라는 것입니다.

하나님을 믿고 하나님이 뜻하신 삶을 사는 것은 강제로 되는 것이 아닙니다. 그럴 값이라면 하나님께서 사람에게 의지나 생각을 주시지 않고 그냥 하나님의 생각대로 움직이도록 만드셨으면 되었던 일입니다. 그럴 능력이 없으신 분도 아닌데 그렇게 하지 않았다는 것, 그리고 사람을 이렇게 만드시고 보시기에 좋다고 하셨다는 것은 그 뜻이 사람이 로봇과 같이 되기를 바라심이 아니라는 것입니다.

그렇게 사람이 자신의 의지를 가지고, 자기 생각을 가지고 심지어 자존심과 인간 존엄성을 가진 존재로서 하나님의 뜻을 행하라는 것입니다. 자기 생각과 의지로 하나님의 뜻을 행한 것이어야 온전한 것이라는 것입니다. 그렇게 되려면 사람은 스스로 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 것이 온전한 것이라는 것을 인정하고 순종해야 하는 것입니다. 그렇게 될 때만 자기 생각과 의지를 가진 사람이 하나님의 뜻을 온전히 행하는 것입니다. 그게 제대로 된 것이라는 것입니다.

문제는 사람이 그렇게 하는 것이 어렵다는 것입니다. 그러면 왜 그것이 어려운지를 생각해 봐야 합니다. 성경에서는 사람이 자기 뜻대로 행한다는 말씀이 많이 나오는데 왜 사람의 생각이나 의지가 하나님의 뜻과 다르냐는 것입니다. 그것은 사람의 내용인 속심령, 본성이 하나님이 아니라는 것입니다. 자기 삶의 목적과 의미가 하나님에게 있는 것이 아니라 자기 육신의 삶을 풍요롭게 하는 것에 있다는 것입니다.

사람은 눈에 보이는 것이 본질이 아닙니다. 사람의 모든 말과 행동은 그 사람 속에 있는 것이 표현된 것입니다. 즉 사람의 내용이 있다는 것입니다. 그 내용이 하나님이 되는 것이 하나님께서 사람을 만드신 목적입니다. 그래서 우리 몸이 하나님이 거하시는 거룩한 성전이라고 하신 본뜻입니다. 우리 인생들은 그 속사람과 내용이 하나님이어야 하는데 그것이 아니기 때문에 하나님의 의와 다른 행동을 하는 것입니다.

그런데 사람들은 자신이 하나님의 뜻대로 살지 못하는 것은 하나님께서 자신을 강제로 주관하시지 않기 때문이라는 얼토당토않게 생각하기 때문입니다. ‘바보야 문제는 경제야!’라는 말과 같이 문제는 하나님께서 강제하시지 않기 때문이 아니라 속사람에 하나님이 거하지 않기 때문이라는 것입니다. 성전에 하나님이 계시지 않은 문제를 하나님께서 자신에게 역사하지 않기 때문이라고 우기는 것입니다.

그러므로 사람이 하나님의 뜻을 행하고, 하나님께서 다스리는 존재가 되려면 사람 안에 하나님의 의가 임재하심으로 그 하나님의 의가 삶과 행동을 이끌어 내는 것이 바로 하나님의 다스림인 것입니다. 하나님의 의가 본성이 되어 그 본성이 자신을 다스리는 것이 하나님의 다스림이신 것입니다. 

그렇게 되려면 무엇보다 하나님의 말씀을 들어야 하는 것이 있어야 하는 것입니다. 듣는 것이 없는데, 속으로 들어간 것이 없는데 그 속에 하나님이 계실 방법이 없는 것입니다. 남자를 알지 못하는데 여자 혼자 아이를 낳을 수 없는 것과 같은 것입니다. 그러니 귀를 달라는 것입니다. 하나님의 사사의 말을 들으라는 것입니다. 그래서 늘 ‘들으라 이스라엘’이라고 말씀하시고, ‘듣는 것이 수양의 기름보다 낫다.’고 하시는 것입니다. 

그렇게 들으면 에봇 즉 제사장의 의복을 입을 것이라는 것입니다. 하나님의 제사장과 같이 될 것이라는 것입니다. 즉 자신을 하나님께 드린 사람이 될 것이라는 것입니다. 그래서 귀걸이로 에봇을 만든 것입니다. 말씀을 들으면 그 존재가 에봇을 입는 존재가 될 것이라는 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 그 말씀이 속사람이 되면 에봇과 같은 형식이 나타날 것이라는 것입니다. 즉 그 삶과 행위가 하나님의 말씀을 표현하고 뜻을 지키게 될 것이라는 것입니다.

그런데 이스라엘 백성들은 말씀을 들으라는 뜻으로 귀걸이를 달라고 한 것을 알지 못하고 금으로 만든 에봇을 섬기더라는 것입니다. 내용이 아니라 형식을 섬기더라는 것입니다. 그래서 이것이 기드온에게 올무가 되었다는 것입니다. 이것은 사실 이스라엘 백성들이 항강 가진 문제였습니다. 예수님께서 계실 때도 늘 내용은 버리고 형식만 좇아서 예수님께서 ‘회칠한 모덤’이라고 또 ‘외식하는 자들’이라고 또 ‘노릇하는 자’라고 말씀하신 것이 바로 이것입니다. 

그리고 바로 이런 안목이 늘 바알과 아세라를 섬기게 했습니다. 늘 눈에 보이는 세계의 풍요를 복으로 여겼다는 것입니다. 눈에 보이는 것은 내용이 표현된 현상이고 형식인데 말씀을 듣지는 않고 에봇을 섬기듯 한다는 것입니다. 그리고 그것은 오늘날까지 그렇습니다. 하나님께 가서, 교회에 가서 눈에 보이는 것, 현상과 형식의 풍요와 안녕을 복으로 구한다는 것입니다. 에봇을 섬기는 것이 바로 이것입니다. 그리고 이런 현상은 하나님의 사사, 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 사람들에게 늘 올무와 같이 부담이 된다는 것을 말씀하신 것이기도 한 것입니다.
