율법이 죄를 알게 한다는 것이 바로 여기서 나오는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 율법을 주신 것은 율법을 따라 하라는 것이 아니라, 율법으로 표현될 수밖에 없는 본성을 가지면 율법을 지키면서 살 수밖에 없다는 것을 말씀하셨다는 것입니다. 그것은 사람이 하나님께서 정한 자리에 있으면 하나님이 원하시는 것을 행동으로 나타낼 수 있다는 것을 말씀하시는 것입니다.

그런데 사람들이 그 율법을 자기의 자리가 아닌 정체성의 자리에서 지키려고 하다보면 그것이 자신으로서는 할 수 없다는 것을 알게 될 수밖에 없습니다. 그때 자신이 율법 앞에서 ‘이렇게 하는 것이 아니구나!’라고 깨닫는 것이 바로 죄를 깨닫고 시인하는 것이 되는 것입니다. 그래서 율법이 죄를 알게 하는 것이지 율법이 죄라서 그런 것이 아니라는 것입니다.

따라서 율법은 온전히 선한 것입니다. 하나님께서 사람을 시험하시려고 율법을 주신 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 ‘행동 강령을 주면 사람들이 행동으로 따라하려 하겠지? 얼마나 하는가 볼까? 그러다보면 자신이 못한다는 것을 알고 항복하겠지?’와 같은 마음으로 율법을 주신 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 율법을 주실 때 분명히 ‘이것은 너와 나의 관계가 정립된 사람들의 모습’이라고 말씀을 하신 것입니다.(출 20:2)

그런데 사람들이 율법을 주신 목적은 외면하고 자신이 가진 기준에 따라 율법을 지키려 한 것입니다. 자신이 가진 기준이라는 것은 다른 것이 아닙니다. 바로 선악과를 먹은 기준입니다. 즉 스스로가 어떤 것은 선한 것이고 어떤 것은 악한 것이라고 정죄하고 판단하는 기준입니다. 그것은 하나님께서 만드신 만물과 사람을 자기 기준으로 판단하는 것이기에 그것은 하나님과 같이 되려는 마음인 것입니다.

그렇게 스스로 선악으로 판단하는 기준을 가지고 육신을 가진 인생을 보니 그런 꼴로는 하나님의 의에 이를 수 없겠다고 여겨서 그 부끄러운 것을 감추려고 행동으로 그것을 감추려 하는 것입니다. 마음에는 음욕이 있는데 입 다물고 조신하게 있어서 전혀 마음에 그런 것이 없는 듯 하는 것이 좋은 신앙이고 의로운 것이라고 여기는 것이 그것입니다. 그런데 어쩔까요? 하나님은 중심을 보시는데? 아니 사람 마음에 무엇이 있는지, 그 본성이 무엇인지 아시는데… 만드셨는데 모르실리 없는 것입니다.

하나님 앞에 죄란 행위에 관한 것이 아닙니다. 살인이나 도적질과 같은 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 그런 행위는 사람의 중심이 하나님의 의에서 벗어나서 나타나는 행동들이지 죄의 본질이 아니라는 것입니다. 죄의 본질은 하나님께서 사람을 만드신 그 정체성의 자리를 벗어나서 사람이 자기가 생각하는 것이 선하다고 여기는 자리로 간 것이 죄의 본질입니다. 그 죄의 본질이 사람으로 하여금 죄를 짓게 만드는 것입니다.

그러니 어떻습니까? 사람이 율법을 지켜서 하나님의 의에 이르려고 하고 있다는 것 자체가 죄의 상태에 있다는 것입니다. 그러니 율법이 의롭지 못한 것이 아니라, 율법을 잘못 이해하고 있는 것이 죄의 상태라는 것입니다. 율법은 하나님의 의가 심령 안에 있어 그것이 생명이 되어 그 생명의 본성으로 나타난 행동과 삶의 모습을 말씀하신 것인데, 자기 안에 그 하나님의 의를 받을 생각 없이 율법을 지키기만 하면 의롭게 된다는 생각을 하고 있는 자리에 있다는 것 그것이 바로 죄인 것입니다.

율법과 예수님은 모두 죄를 드러나게 한다.

그래서 율법은 죄를 드러나게 합니다. 이는 율법만 그런 것이 아닙니다. 예수님께서 이 땅에 오시므로 모든 사람들의 죄가 드러난 것입니다. 예수님께서 이 땅에 오셔서 하나님의 의를 말씀하시고 보이셨기 때문에 그 자리에 없는 모든 이들이 죄 가운데 있다는 것이 드러났다고 하셨습니다.

내가 와서 저희에게 말하지 아니하였더면 죄가 없었으려니와 지금은 그 죄를 핑계할 수 없느니라(요 15:22)

율법이나 예수님이나 다 하나님의 의가 표현된 것입니다. 율법은 하나님의 말씀이 돌판에 새겨진 것이고, 예수님은 예수님의 말씀이 육신이 되신 분이심이 그것입니다. 그렇게 하나님께서 사람들에게 하나님의 의와 뜻과 사람 지으신 이유와 목적을 말씀하시므로 사람들의 죄가 드러나는 것입니다. 표준이 주어지면 표준에 합당한 것과 그렇지 않은 것은 자연스럽게 나누어지는 것입니다. 율법과 예수님은 모두 하나님께서 가지신 사람에 대한 기준을 말씀하신 것입니다.

그런데 사람들은 그 뜻을 자기의 뜻대로 해석을 하는 것입니다. 그런 행위가 바로 선악과를 먹은 것입니다. 하나님이 만드신 만물에 대하여 사람이 ‘이것이 선하고, 저것이 악하며, 이렇게 하는 것이 선이고, 저렇게 하는 것이 악한 것’이라고 규정하는 것이 사람의 생각입니다. 그런 생각들이 서로 충돌하여 다투고 전쟁하고 서로 죽이고 시기하는 것입니다. 그것은 교회도 마찬가지입니다. 알고 보면 교회가 더 좋지 않습니다. 사람 안에서 나온 생각을 표현함에 있어 하나님의 이름과 성경을 도용한 탓에 그것이 하나님의 뜻이라고 주장하고 있으니 더 참혹한 일이기도 합니다.

그렇게 사람들이 하나님이 주신 말씀을 자의적으로, 자기가 가진 선과 악의 기준(선악과를 먹은 상태에서)으로 판단해서 율법은 말과 행동과 생각으로 지켜내는 것이라고 주장하는 것입니다. 즉 행동을 바꾸면 생명이 바뀐다고 여기는 것입니다. 개가 침대에서 같이 잔다고 사람이 되는 것이 아닙니다. 그런 생각이나 곰이 마늘 먹고 사람이 되었다는 신앙이나 같은 것입니다. 이름만 하나님을 믿는 것일 뿐.

또한 그런 생각, 하나님께서 주신 말씀을 자의적으로 해석함으로서 큰 사고를 하나 치게 되는데 그것이 바로 예수님을 십자가에 못 박은 것입니다. 사람이 가진 기준으로 볼 때 예수님의 혈통이나 행위는 도저히 하나님의 아들이 될 수 없다고 생각했다는 것입니다. 하나님의 의는 그것이 아니라는 것입니다. 하나님의 의가 육신으로 오셨음에도 자기가 규정한 하나님의 아들에 부합되지 않는다고 십자가에 못 박은 것입니다.

율법으로 죄가 드러나고, 그래서 사람이 하나님의 은혜를 입게 되듯, 사람들이 율법을 지키는 가치관, 자기가 가진 선과 악의 기준으로 하나님의 의를 판단하는 기준으로 볼 때 도저히 하나님의 아들이라고 여기지 못했던 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도를 십자가에 못 박음으로 구원이 임한 것입니다. 이것이 바로 율법이 죄를 알게 하고 그리스도의 죽으심으로 우리가 은혜를 입게 되는 것이라는 말씀을 하시는 것입니다.

그러므로 율법이 주어진 것과 예수님께서 이 땅에 오신 것은 모두 하나님께서 사람에게 두신 의와 뜻을 전하신 것입니다. 그것을 사람이 자기의 기준으로 판단하고 하나님이 주신 의도와 방향과는 다르게 지키려고 하면 율법과 성경을 문자 그대로 행동으로 지켜내려 하게 되고, 그런 생각은 결국 예수님을 십자가에 못 박게 되는 것입니다. 즉 그것이 바로 죄의 상태인 것입니다.

따라서 우리가 율법을 부정하게 여기거나 또 율법이나 성경을 그대로 지켜 행하여서 하나님의 의에 이른다고 생각하고 살아가는 것은 다 죄 가운데 있는 것입니다. 예수님께서 율법을 완성하러 오셨다고 하신 것은 하나님의 의가 육신이 되신 분이기 때문입니다. 즉 율법을 주신 목적이 육신이 되었다는 것입니다. 말씀이 육신이 되었다는 것은 하나님께서 사람에게 정하신 의와 뜻이 사람 심령 안에서 생명이 되어 그 생명이 가진 본성에 따라 그 육신의 삶을 살게 된다는 것을 말씀하시는 것입니다. 

그리고 그와 같이 심령 안에 하나님의 의가 생명으로 있어 그것이 육신으로 표현되는 사람의 삶의 모습이 어떤지를 기록한 말씀이 바로 성경이라는 것입니다. 따라서 군복을 입어 군인이 되는 것이 아니라 군인이라서 군복을 입듯, 율법과 성경을 지켜 의에 이르는 것이 아니라, 의가 자기 생명이 되므로 그 생명의 본성이 육신으로 표현되는 모습이 바로 율법과 성경에 기록된 모습인 것입니다.
