(로마서 7:1-25) 율법과 죄에 대한 정리 (1) – 율법에 매인 삶

바울 사도는 로마서 7장에서 혼인을 예로 들면서 율법과 죄 그리고 의로움에 대하여 정리해 가고 있습니다. 혼인에 있어 남편이 살아 있을 때에 아내가 다른 남자에게로 가면 간음한 것이지만 남편이 죽고 나면 자유하여 다른 남자에게 갈 수 있듯, 우리가 율법 아래 있었다가 그 율법이 그리스도의 죽으심으로 우리가 자유케 되어 이제는 은혜 안에 거할 수 있다는 것입니다.

이 블로그에서도 꾸준하게 율법에 대하여 말씀을 드렸습니다. 바울 사도가 “율법이 죄냐? 그럴 수 없느니라(롬 7:7)”라고 하신 것과 같이 율법은 불의한 것이 아닙니다. 성경에서 율법에 대하여 우리가 죽고 복음과 의에 대하여 산다는 말씀을 하니 율법이라는 것은 나쁜 것이라고 생각하기도 하지만 율법 자체가 문제가 있는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 주신 것이 불의할 수 없는 것입니다.

그럼에도 불구하고 율법이 우리의 죄를 드러나게 하고, 또 우리가 율법에서 벗어나야 하며, 예수님의 죽으심으로 율법 아래 있던 우리가 자유를 얻었다고 하시는 것은 율법 자체의 문제가 아니라, 사람이 율법에 대하여 자의적으로 받아들이는 세계에 대하여 말씀하시고 있기 때문입니다.

율법은 하나님과 어떤 관계가 형성된 사람들의 삶의 모습

율법은 분명히 하나님께서 주신 것입니다. 율법의 근간인 십계명을 모세에게 돌판에 새겨서 시내산에서 주셨습니다. 십계명은 출애굽기 20장에 나오는데 그 시작 부분인 2절에 이런 말씀이 있습니다.

나는 너를 애굽 땅 종 되었던 집에서 인도하여 낸 너의 하나님 여호와로라(출 20:2)

이 말씀은 하나님께서 모세에게 십계명을 주실 때 먼저 선언하신 말씀입니다. 십계명은 주로 “너는 ~할찌니라”라고 말씀하셨는데, 그것은 십계명은 하나님과 어떤 기준에 의하여 <너와 나>의 관계가 형성된 사람들의 계명이라는 것입니다. 십계명이 그렇다는 것은 모든 율법이 다 하나님과 어떤 관계가 형성된 사람들의 계명이고 법이라는 것입니다.

이것을 정리하면, 십계명과 율법은 하나님과 너와 나의 관계가 성립된 사람에게 적용되는 법이라는 것입니다. 너와 나의 관계가 정립되었다는 것은 서로에게 의미가 있는 존재가 되었다는 것입니다. 그러려면 서로가 서로에게 의미가 되고자 하는 기대가 충족이 되어야 하는 것인데, 하나님께서는 사람을 통해서 하나님의 성품을 표현하시고자 하시고, 사람은 빈 그릇과 같아서 자기 안에 비어 있는 존재의 목적과 삶의 의미를 하나님 안에서 발견하는 것입니다. 그렇게 하나님과 사람이 내용과 형식으로 하나가 될 때 비로소 하나님과 사람은 서로에게 너와 나의 관계가 형성이 되는 것이며, 그렇게 될 때 율법이 의미가 있는 것입니다.

그러므로 율법이 이 블로그에서 지속적으로 말씀을 드리는 것과 같이 사람이 하나님께서 자신을 만드신 목적이 무엇인지를 알고 그것이 자기 삶의 본성(생명의 본성)이 되어 삶으로 표현되는 모습이 정의된 것이 바로 율법이라는 것입니다. 물고기의 유전자는 물속에서 살 수 있도록 하고, 새의 유전자는 하늘을 날게 하듯, 하나님의 의가 자기 안에 있는 사람의 삶은 하나님께서 주신 율법의 모양으로 나타난다는 것입니다.

그리고 이것은 율법만의 이야기가 아닙니다. 성경의 모든 말씀이 그렇습니다. 많은 사람들은 성경을 읽고 그대로 사는 것, 말씀을 행위로 지키는 것이 성경대로 사는 것이고 계명을 지키는 것이라고 생각합니다. 하지만 성경은 그런 법을 가지고 있지 않습니다. 성경은 거듭남의 이야기고, 생명의 이야기입니다. 사람의 심령 안에 하나님께서 생명 있는 것으로 여기는 의가 있으면 그 사람의 삶이 성경과 같이 된다는 것을 말씀하시는 것입니다.

우리는 성경을 예수 그리스도에 대한 이야기라고 합니다. 이것에 대하여 이견은 없을 것입니다. 성경이 예수 그리스도에 대한 이야기라는 것은 예수님이 어떤 분이신지를 말씀하신 것이라는 것입니다. 어떻게 하면 예수님이 되는지에 대한 것이 아닙니다. 예수님께서 이 땅에 오실 때 이미 그리스도요 하나님의 아들의 상태로 오셨지, 오셔서 율법을 지켜 그리스도가 되신 것이 아닙니다. 나신 것입니다. 났다는 것은 온전하다는 것입니다. 그리스도로 나셨지, 수련해서 그리스도가 되신 것이 아니라는 것입니다.

그런데 사람들은 성경을 지키고 수련하고 연단하며 훈련하고 금욕적인 노력을 거쳐서 그리스도가 된다면서 수녀가 되고, 신부가 되며 또 금식을 하고 노력하며 헌금하고 있습니다. 그런 것은 성경을 거꾸로 보는 것입니다. 모든 것은 온전한 그리스도의 본성으로 나는 것이 먼저입니다. 그렇게 나면 싫어도 하나님께서 주신 성경대로 살 수밖에 없습니다. 사람이 남자나 여자로 사는 것이 싫어도 그렇게 나면 그렇게 사는 것과 같은 것입니다.

그런데 사람들이 성경을 지키려고 합니다. 자기의 행동으로 성경을 지키려고 성경에 있는 말씀대로 생각하려고 마음을 먹고 또 그 생각이 흐트러지지 않으려 신념을 가지고 애씁니다. 늘 실패하는데 그러고 있습니다. 할 때 마다 실패하면 ‘혹시 이 방법이 아닌가?’ 의심할 법도 한데, 계속 그렇게 하면서 ‘더 열심히, 더 열심히!’를 다지면서 더 열심히 할 수 있는 힘을 하나님께 달라고 기도합니다. 그게 하나님의 법이 아닌데 하나님께 가서 그렇게 기도한다는 것입니다.

율법에 얽매였던 것이란 율법이 안에서 밖으로 표현되는 세계가 아니라 율법을 지켜야 하나님의 의에 이른다는 생각에 사로 잡혀서 성경을 행위로 지켜내려는 삶을 말하는 것입니다. 지키려고 한 성경이 구약이냐, 율법이냐, 십계명이냐가 중요한 것이 아닙니다. 그것이 무엇이라도 하나님이 주신 율법이나 말씀을 행동으로 지켜야 하나님의 의에 이른다는 생각에 사로 잡혀서 율법의 본질은 모른 체 그것을 지켜야 한다고 여기며 사는 삶이 바로 율법에 매인 삶이라는 것입니다.
