땅에 대한 입다와 암몬 왕의 논쟁

사사기 11장에는 사사 입다와 암몬 자손의 왕이 땅을 빌미로 논쟁을 하는 것이 나옵니다. 시작은 입다가 암몬 왕에게 ‘왜 이유 없이 남의 땅을 침공하였느냐?’고 물은 것에서 시작했고, 암몬 왕은 요단 동편의 이스라엘이 두 지파 반(갓, 르우벤, 므낫세 반)이 거하는 땅이 자신들의 땅이라고 주장하는 답을 보내왔고, 사사 입다가 출애굽 과정을 설명하면서 이스라엘은 암몬의 땅을 침략하거나 점령하지 않았다는 것을 주장함으로 끝나는데 마지막에 암몬 왕은 그것을 듣지 않았다고 했습니다.

이러한 땅에 대한 논쟁의 정점은 11장 24절이라 할 수 있습니다.

네 신 그모스가 네게 주어 얻게 한 땅을 네가 얻지 않겠느냐 우리 하나님 여호와께서 우리 앞에서 어떤 사람이든지 쫓아내시면 그 땅을 우리가 얻으리라

사사 입다는 어떤 땅이라도 하나님께서 주시면 하나님 나라의 땅이 된다는 것을 이야기 하고 있습니다. 

그러니까 결국 이것은 땅에 관한 이야기라는 것입니다. 땅에 관한 이야기라는 것은 ‘사람’에 관한 이야기라는 것입니다. 사람의 마음을 누가 점령하고 있는지에 대한 이야기를 사사기가 하고 있다는 것입니다. 모압과 암몬의 신 그모스(인신공양을 한다고 알려진 신)이 다스리는 땅에는 모압과 암몬이 살고 하나님이 주신 땅에는 하나님의 백성들이 산다는 것입니다. 특히 하나님께서 주시면 하나님의 백성의 땅이 된다는 것을 사사 입다는 분명히 하고 있습니다.

알고 보면 이 사사기 전체가 그 이야기입니다. 사사기가 말하는 땅이 바로 땅과 같은 흙으로 창조된 사람의 이야기라는 것입니다. 이스라엘의 백성들이 거하는 땅, 그것은 하나님의 의가 다스리는 땅이라는 의미입니다. 하나님의 의가 자신의 의라고 여기는 이들의 이야기라는 것입니다. 땅은 또 더 넓은 의미로 보면 하나님께서 거하시고자 한 모든 인간의 심령이기도 한 것입니다.

사사 입다는 그모스라는 신이 거하는 땅은 모압과 암몬의 땅이고, 하나님이 거하시는 땅은 하나님의 것이라고 말하고 있습니다. 사람의 마음이 그렇습니다. 몸이 교회에 다니는 것이 문제가 아니라, 그 마음에 누가 거하느냐의 문제가 그 사람의 신앙 정체성이라는 것입니다. 교회에 다닌다고 해도 하나님을 빌어 세상에서 성공하는 것을 목적으로 한다면 그것은 그모스나 이방신을 섬기는 사람이라는 것입니다.(그렇게 보면 지금 대부분의 교회는 이방신을 섬기고 있다고 할 수 있습니다.)

반면에 암몬의 왕은 땅이라 신의 문제가 아니라 행위의 문제라고 말합니다. 누가 점령하느냐의 문제라는 것입니다. 그러나 그런 문제는 항상 다툼이 있습니다. 암몬의 땅에 대하여 이스라엘이 역사적으로 어떤 태도를 취했는지 사사 입다가 설명을 하지만 암몬의 왕은 듣지 않고 자기가 옳다는 것만 주장합니다. 

행위로 하나님을 섬기는 것이 그렇습니다. 예배드리자고 하면서 그것을 어떤 모양, 어떤 형태로 드릴 것인지를 가지고 다투어서 교단이 갈라지는 것이 바로 그것 때문입니다. 행위로 섬기는 것에는 늘 다툼이 있다는 것입니다. 더욱이 그런 다툼은 끝나지도 않습니다. 어느 정도 다투다가는 서로 듣지 않기 때문입니다. 

그러나 사사 입다는 땅, 곧 사람의 마음은 신의 영역이라는 것입니다. 행위로 누가 점령했는지의 문제가 아니라 어떤 신을 섬기느냐의 문제라는 것입니다. 여기서 누가 이방인인지가 나타나는 것입니다. 이방인은 행위로 땅 곧 사람 마음의 정체성을 결정하지만 사실은 무엇을 섬기느냐의 문제인 것입니다. 왜냐하면 사람의 행위는 그 마음이 섬기는 것을 표현하기 때문이니다.

사사 입다는 사람이 하나님을 섬기는 하나님의 땅 곧 하나님의 사람이 되고, 그모스를 섬기면 이방인이 되는 것이라고 선언합니다. 이방인이라는 존재는 어떤 땅에 몸이 거하느냐의 문제가 아니라는 것입니다. 몸이 교회에 다니는지 아닌지로 교인이 갈리는 것이 아니고, 눈을 감고해야 기도가 되는 것이 아니며, 기도 말미에 주문처럼 ‘예수님 이름으로’라고를 붙여야 제대로 된 기도가 되는 것이 아니라 그 마음에 무엇을 섬기는지가 핵심이라는 것입니다. 마음이 섬기는 것을 몸이 행하는 것이지 몸이 행한다고 섬기는 것이 정해지는 것이 아니기 때문입니다.

사사기가 보여주는 각종 전쟁의 본질은 영적인 것입니다. 어느 것이 이방인 곧 하나님을 알지 못하고 대항하는 것인지, 하나님을 섬기는 사람의 일은 또 어떻게 되는지를 보이는 것입니다. 하나님을 섬기라고 지은 사람이 그 마음에 하나님의 정체성과 다르게 풍요와 다산을 섬기는 것이 다 이방인을 섬기는 것이라는 것입니다. 그들이 그 마음에 섬기는 것을 하나님이라고 여기며 불러도 그렇게 되는 것이 아닌 것입니다. 오히려 하나님을 섬긴다면서 풍요와 다산을 꿈꾸면 이스라엘 백성들이 이방인의 침략을 받듯이 그 마음이 늘 갈등이 생기는 것입니다. 많은 사람들이 교회에 다니지만 돈 문제, 심지어 교회의 문제로 갈등을 겪는 것이 바로 사사기가 보여주는 것입니다.
