무엇이 육신을 좇는 육신의 일인가?

우리는 어떤 것을 육신의 일로 알고 있을까요? 육신을 좇는 자는 육신의 일을 한다고 하는 것에 대하여 일반적으로는 하나님께 예배드릴 시간에 가서 일을 하는 것과 같은 것을 세상의 방법이라 칭하고 그런 방법으로 세상의 것을 취하려는 노력을 세상의 일 혹은 육신의 일이라고들 합니다. 우리는 이런 이야기를 보통의 교회에서 늘 들을 수 있습니다.

그래서 교회는 그렇게 교회에 올 시간에 일하는 것은 하나님의 방법이 아니고, 교회가 정한 시간에는 예배드리고 육신이 있기에 먹고 사는 문제, 자녀의 문제, 사업의 문제는 하나님께 맡기라면 하나님께 기도하라고 합니다. 그러면서 하나님께서 그런 기도를 들어주시려면 하나님의 마음에 들어야 하니 성경말씀을 지키고 살고, 교회가 가르치는 대로 하고, 목사에게 잘 하라고도 합니다. 또 교회를 신축하거나 교육관을 짓는 것은 하나님의 일이니 그 일에 헌금을 하면 헌금 한 것 보다 몇 배로 하나님께서 갚아 주실 것이라며 헌금을 독려하기도 합니다.

하지만 그런 신앙관은 핵심을 벗어난 것입니다. 핵심은 ‘누구에게, 어떤 방법으로 자신이 필요한 것을 구하느냐?’의 문제가 아닙니다. 핵심은 자신이 ‘무엇을 간절히 바라느냐?’의 문제입니다. 간절히 바란다는 것은 그것이 본질이고 핵심이라고 여긴다는 것입니다. 

다른 신께 가거나, 자기 육신의 노력으로 사업의 성공을 도모하지 않고 하나님께 가서 자기가 하는 사업이 잘 되게 해 달라고 기도하고 믿는다고 하나님을 믿는 것이 아닙니다. 결국 그것은 하나님이 자기 바라는 것을 이루어줄 도구로 선택했다는 것이기 때문입니다. 그리고 하나님께 가서 ‘내가 다른 신도 아니고 당신을 선택했으니 당신은 나의 바람을 들어 주셔야 합니다.’라고 하는 것과 다를 바가 없기 때문입니다.

그러므로 육신의 일을 좇는다는 것은 결국 자기중심적인 관점에서 육신이 살 동안 필요한 것 바라는 것을 좇는 것입니다. 그것을 좇는 것에 있어 그 방법으로 하나님을 믿고 설사 자기 몸을 불사르게 내어 준다고 해도 아무 소용이 없다는 것이 바로 성경의 말씀인 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그런 신앙이 바로 율법을 몸으로 지켜내어 하나님께 의롭게 되겠다는 신앙이기 때문입니다.

그런 신앙에 있어 하나님 앞에 의로워지겠다고 하는 목적도 하나님의 의도와 다릅니다. 자기가 바라는 것을 하나님께서 들어 주시려면 자기가 하고 싶은 것을 참고 하나님이 원하시는 것을 해야 되기 때문입니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 그런 신앙을 보고 간사한 것이라고 하시며, 하나님은 사람의 중심을 보신다고 하시는 것입니다.

그래서 육신으로 아무리 성경을 지키려고 노력해도 소용이 없다는 것입니다. 주일 예배에 빠지지 않고, 십일조를 내며, 교회의 행사에 열심이며, 봉사활동에 적극적이라고 해도 그렇게 하는 목적이 결국은 자기가 원하는 것을 하나님께 얻기 위한 기만에 불과한 것이기 때문입니다. 더욱이 그 행위들도 하나님께서 원하시는 것에 미치지 못하는데 자기가 가진 기준으로 할 만큼 했다고 여깁니다. 예배 때 가서 졸고, 일 년 52주 설교를 들었는데 기억나는 것도 거의 없고(전하는 사람도 함께 문제지만), 살면서 얻어먹은 수익에 대한 십일조는 한계라며 생략하고, 교회 행사에 가서는 자기가 원하는 대로 되지 않는다고 화를 내며, 어쩌다 가는 봉사활동도 생색내고 참석하지 않는 사람들을 정죄하는 것이 그것입니다. 그나마 그것으로 그치면 다행인데, 그렇게 했음에도 불구하고 자기가 원하는 것이 이루어지지 않으면 하나님을 원망하기 까지 합니다. ‘내가 이렇게 했는데도 안 들어주시냐?’고.

육신의 일은 육신의 방법이나 세상의 방법으로 자기에게 필요한 것을 구하는 것을 말하는 것이 아니라, 방법이나 신앙의 대상을 떠나 무엇이 필요한 것인지, 자기에게 무엇이 결핍되었는지에 대한 것입니다. 자기 육신의 삶에 대하여, 그것이 본질이라 여기고 그 삶에 필요한 것을 하나님께 구한다면 그것은 하나님을 믿는 것 같으나 바로 그것이 육신을 좇는 것이고 육신의 일인 것입니다.

The work of the flesh is not about asking for what is necessary in the way of the flesh or in the way of the world, but about what is needed from the method or the object of faith and what is lacking for him.
