(로마서 14:1-12) 믿음 없음을 책망하는 바보들

“교회는 어떤 곳이라고 생각해?”

“교회는 적어도 사람이 와서 평안을 느끼는 곳이어야지요?”

수년 전 저를 아는 어떤 형님의 물음과 저의 대답입니다. 물론 교회가 평안하기만 하면 되는 것은 아닙니다. 제가 평안이라고 이야기 한 것은 그 사람의 신앙이 어떤 수준이고, 또 때로 성경의 내용을 의심하고 있더라도, 그 사람이 교회에 와서 설사 졸면서 예배드리고 앉았더라도, 그 시간만은 평안해야 한다는 것입니다.

왜 그런 이야기를 했는가 하면 거의 대부분이라고 할 수 있는 교회가 사람을 평안하게 만들지 않습니다. 아니 오히려 불안하고 평안하지 않게 만듭니다. 성경에 예수님께서 검을 던지러 왔다고 하신 말씀을 인용하기도 합니다. 사람의 마음에 신앙적 갈등을 일으켜야 한다는 것입니다. 바울 사도가 로마서 14장 전반부에서 말씀하고자 하는 것이 바로 이것에 관한 것입니다.

거의 대부분의 교회나 종교 지도자들(단지 스스로 지도자라고 착각할 뿐이지만)이 착각하고 망각하는 것이 있는데 예수님을 믿는 신앙은 고백에서 시작하는 것이라는 것입니다. 그리고 이 고백은 강압이나 갈등이나 자극을 줘서 이끌어내는 것이 아니라, 하나님의 말씀이 육신이 되어서 사는 사람(이런 사람이 진정한 종교적 지도자)의 삶과 고백들을 듣고서 누가 뭐라 하지 않음에도 들은 것, 본 것이 자기 안에서 싹이 나고 생명이 되면서 그 생명이 스스로 자신을 돌이키게 하고, 스스로 고백하는 것이라는 것입니다.

그런데 지금의 많은 교회나 목사들은 교회 안에 있는 성도들에게 자꾸 신앙적 자극을 줍니다. 설교로 책망하는 것은 이미 본분이 되었고, 당사자가 없는 자리에서 소위 말하는 ‘뒷담화’를 하기 일쑤입니다. “그 사람 말이야, 신앙이 그러면 안 되는데…”, “새벽기도회를 안 나오니 자꾸 불운한 일들이 생기는 거야”, “십일조를 하지 않으니 사업이 잘 될 리가 있나?”와 같은 말들을 합니다.

그러면 사람들은 그런 것이 두려워집니다. 그래서 평안하지 않게 됩니다. 일 잘하기 바라는 회사에서 일을 잘 하지 못하여 받는 스트레스나, 교회에서 믿음 없다고 받는 스트레스가 다를 리도 없고 그 의와 법도 같습니다. 즉 교회에서 믿음 없다고 책망하는 것은 세상적인 법칙이라는 것입니다. 한 마디로 세상과 결탁했기에 세상에 사용하는 법을 그대로 쓰는 것입니다.

바울 사도는 이렇게 말씀하고 있습니다.

믿음이 연약한 자를 너희가 받되 그의 의심하는 바를 비판하지 말라(롬 14:1)

이 말씀이 바로 교회가 사람을 어떻게 대하여야 하는지를 말씀하시는 것입니다. 

하나님의 법은 항상 세상과는 반대입니다. 세상은 올라가서 의롭고 선하게 되지만 하나님의 법은 내려가고 낮아져서 의에 이르게 됩니다. 세상의 법은 자극해서 성과를 내는 것을 의롭게 여기지만 하나님의 법은 이생에서 다하지 못한다고 해도 살 동안 사람들이 스스로 뉘우칠 수 있도록 자신이 살아내고 섬기는 것을 위하여 자기 삶을 소비하는 것에 있습니다.

교회는 사람들의 믿음을 가르치거나, 책망하거나, 훈육하는 곳이 아닙니다. 교회는 사람이 와서 자기가 평안하게 하나님의 법으로 사는 사람들의 삶과 말과 모습을 보고서 스스로 그렇게 되고 싶어하는 마음이 일어나는 곳입니다. 그렇게 스스로 마음이 일어나는 것이 가장 온전한 교육이고, 가장 강권하는 것이며, 가장 크게 교훈을 주는 곳입니다. 스스로 깨닫고 뉘우치며 배우고 바꾸는데 그것 이상의 것이 세상이 어디에 있단 말입니까?

그러나 바울 시대의 교회에서부터 지금의 교회까지 모두들 그 방법을 버렸습니다. 하나님의 법을 버렸다는 것입니다. 그래서 교회에 가면 회사에 가서 일 못한다며 책망 받듯이 믿음이 없다고, 헌금을 잘 내지 않는다고, 교회에 봉사하지 않는다고 책망 받거나 눈치를 주거나 끊임없는 요쳥을 받고 있다는 것이 바로 그것입니다. 그것은 교회의 모습이 아닙니다. 설사 그것이 하나님의 의에 관한 것이라도. 하나님의 의를 세상의 법으로 사용하면 되겠습니까? 그것이 간음한 것이고, 그것이 멸망의 가증한 것이 거룩한 곳에 선 것입니다.

바울 사도가 형제의 믿음 없음이나 또한 의심하는 것을 책망하지 말라고 한 것이 바로 이것입니다. 그런데 교회들은 아주 이것에 제대로 맛이 들었습니다. 심지어 아주 훌륭한 복음적 계시를 가지고 있는 교회들도 이 맛을 버리지 못합니다. 참으로 안타깝고 통탄할 일입니다.

교회가 그렇게 하는 것에는 나름의 이유가 있습니다. ‘내 집을 강권하여 채우라’고 하신 것이나, 예수님께서 이 땅에 화평이 아니라 검을 주러 왔다는 말씀들과 같은 것 때문입니다. 하지만 진정한 강권이 무엇일까요? 강제로 끌어다 교회에 앉혀 놓는 것이 강권입니까? 아니면 스스로 오고 싶은 마음이 들어서 미치도록 하는 것이 강권입니까? 

예수님께서 주신 검이 누구 손에 있어야겠습니까? 스스로 자신의 마음을 찌르고 갈라서 돌이킬 수 있도록 하는 것이 예수님의 검입니다. 예수님께서 십자가 밑에 있는 백부장에게 아무 말씀도 하지 않았는데 그 사람이 스스로 자기 마음을 찢고 ‘그는 실로 하나님의 아들이었다.’고 말하게 된 것이 바로 예수님의 검입니다. 다시 말해서 사람들이 볼 때 스스로 마음을 돌이킬 수밖에 없는 말씀을 전하고 삶을 살아내는 것 그것이 예수님이 이 땅에 일으킨 갈등이지, 예수 믿어야 한다며 사람들을 귀찮게 하고 강권하며, 교회에서 사람의 신앙을 교훈한다며 비판하는 것이 검입니까? 그것은 성경을 아주 모욕하는 것입니다.

잠언에는 이런 말씀이 있습니다.

이른 아침에 큰 소리로 자기 이웃을 축복하면 도리어 저주 같이 여기게 되리라(잠 27:14)

축복하는 사람이야 축복한다고 하고, 교훈하는 사람도 자기야 사랑으로 한다고 하겠지만, 알아야 할 것은 언어나 의사 표현은 어디까지나 수신자 부담이라는 것입니다. 받는 사람이 그렇게 받아야 하는 것이지 주는 사람이 아무리 대단한 사랑이라고 한들 그것이 무슨 소용이겠습니까? 오히려 교회 안에 의심하는 사람이 있다면 그 사람이 확신을 가지고 볼 것이 없다는 반성이 필요한 것이지 그 사람을 비판하거나 판단할 일이 아니라는 것이 바울 사도의 말씀인 것입니다.

이것은 하나님의 나라인 교회의 일이고, 그리스도의 일입니다. 그러므로 세상이 법과는 다른 법과 의가 있는 것입니다. 세상은 효율을 추구하니 사람을 자극하고 책망하여 돌이키게 하나, 하나님의 법과 그리스도께서 보이신 것은 사람이 보고서 자신을 스스로 돌이키고 회개하게 하는 삶을 살아내는 것입니다. 그래서 그것이 십자가를 지는 것이고, 섬기는 것이며, 삶을 소비하는 것입니다. 예수님께서 우리에게 보이신 것이 그것입니다.

The apostle Paul says:

Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. (Romans 14: 1)

God's law is always the opposite of the world. The world goes up and becomes righteous and good, but the law of God goes down and goes down to righteousness. The law of the world stimulates and commits to performance, but the law of God is in consuming oneself to live and serve for the sake of self-repentance, even though it is not in this life.

The Church is not the place to teach, to rebuke, or to discipline people's faith. The church is a place where people come and want to be like themselves, seeing the lives, words and images of people who live in God's law in peace. It is the most complete education, the strongest power, and the greatest lesson to be learned by yourself. Where is the world than it is to realize, to repent, to learn and change?

However, from the church of Paul's day to the present church, everyone has abandoned it. I have forsaken the law of God. There is a reason for the church to do so. It is because of the words that Jesus came to bring the sword, not the peace, to the earth. But what is the real power? Is it compulsory to force them to sit in church? Or is it a compulsion to make you crazy because you want to come to yourself?

Whose hand should Jesus' sword be in his hand? It is the sword of Jesus that you can poke your heart and turn it back. Jesus did not say anything to the centurion at the bottom of the cross, but he was the sword of Jesus himself who tore his heart and said, 'He was indeed the Son of God.' In other words, when people see that they can not help but turn their minds and live their lives, it is a conflict that Jesus caused in the earth, that they should believe in Jesus, Is it a sword? It is very insulting the Bible.

There is a saying in Proverbs.

If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse. (Proverbs 27:14)

It is blessing, blessing, and the person who teaches is also said to be love, but the thing to know is that the expression of language and expression is a burden to the recipient. The recipient should receive it, but what is the use of it, no matter how great the love is? Rather, if there is any doubt in the church, it is Paul's word that he needs a reflection that there is nothing to be sure of, and that he is not to criticize or judge the person.

This is the work of the Church, the Kingdom of God, and the work of Christ. Therefore, the world has different laws and laws than law. The world pursues efficiency, stimulating and reproving people, but the law of God and Christ have shown that a person can live a life that turns him or herself into repentance. So that is to take the cross, to serve, to consume life. That is what Jesus showed us.
