왼손잡이 사사 에훗은 80년간 사사로서 이스라엘을 다스렸습니다. 그리고 이어서 삼갈이라는 사사가 소막대기로 블레셋 사람 600명을 죽였다고 기록되어 있습니다. 성경에 자주 나오는 블레셋이라는 말의 뜻은 아주 다양하다고 합니다. 기본적으로 ‘이방인’, ‘이주자’, ‘외국인’이란 의미를 가지고 있고, 또 ‘교양 없는 사람’이라는 의미도 있다고 합니다. 그런 모든 면을 모아보면 블레셋이란 하나님과 의가 다른 생명을 가진 사람을 총칭하는 말이라고 해도 무방할 것 같습니다.

사사 에훗은 사사기에 나오는 사사 중에서 가장 기 세월동안 이스라엘을 통치했습니다. 에훗이라는 사사의 어떤 면이 오랫동안 통치하게 했다는 것을 연관시킬만한 기록은 찾기 힘듭니다. 그러나 사사기 전반을 통하여 하나님의 사사 곧 심판자이자 통치자가 죽고 없으면 이스라엘은 반드시 하나님께 악을 행한다는 것입니다. 그러니까 이는 역설적으로 사람이 하나님께 범죄 한다는 것은 곧 하나님의 다스림이 없는 것이라는 말씀이라 할 수 있습니다.

에훗이 죽자 다시 이스라엘은 악을 행하였다고 했습니다. 이것을 생각해보면 이스라엘이 왜 그렇게 반복적으로 하나님께 악을 행했을까? 학습효과도 없나? 라고 의문도 들 수 있지만, 또 한 편으로 보면 앞서 말씀 드린 것과 같이 사람이 하나님께 악을 행하는 것은 다른 것이 아니라 하나님의 다스림이 없으면 그렇게 된다는 것을 말씀하시는 것이기도 합니다.

또한 이 사사기 포스트에서 지속적으로 말씀드리는 것 중의 하나가 이스라엘을 침략해서 괴롭히는 이방민족의 정체성이 이스라엘 백성이 하나님 앞에서 어떤 악한 마음을 가졌는지를 대략 설명하고 있다는 것입니다. 이것은 마치 사람이 돈에 대하여 욕심을 내면 돈 문제로 그 마음이 곤고하고 삶이 고달프게 되는 것과 같은 것입니다. 알고 보면 사람이 인생을 살면서 느끼는 곤고함은 세상이 자신을 해하려 해서가 아니라 자기 마음에 있는 것이 뜻대로 되지 않으므로 생기는 갈등인 것입니다.

그래서 성경은 욕심이 잉태한즉 죄를 낳고, 죄가 장성한즉 사망을 낳느니라(약 1:15)

어쩌면 이것은 우리가 하나님을 믿는 이유와 연관된 것입니다. 사람이 살면서 겪는 모든 갈등과 다툼은 바로 자기 안에 가지고 있는 어떤 것으로 인한 것이라는 것입니다. 이스라엘 안에 하나님의 신이 임한 사사가 있듯이 자기 안에 하나님의 의가 있다면 하나님께서 이방인으로 또 악으로 여기시는 것으로 인한 갈등이 없고, 그와 다르게 사람 안에 하나님의 의가 아니라 세상의 돈이나 명예와 같은 것, 그리고 자기 스스로 옳다고 여기는 것이 있다면 그것이 자신을 괴롭힌다는 것을 말씀하시는 것입니다.

에훗이 죽고 난 다음에 간단하게 삼갈이라는 사사가 통치했다고 기록이 되어 있습니다. 그때도 블레셋, 즉 이방인이 쳐들어왔다는 것이고, 블레셋이 들어왔다는 것은 이스라엘 안에 사사가 없으므로 하나님의 의를 버리고 다시 이방인의 마음을 가지고 있었다는 것입니다. 상태가 그랬다는 것입니다. 그렇게 되면 사람은 하나님께 자기의 죄를 고백하듯이 그 곤고함을 아뢰어야 하는 것입니다.

그렇게 하나님께 자신의 곤고함을 아뢰었더니 하나님께서 응답하셨다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 응답하셨다는 것은 이스라엘이 구하는 바가 하나님의 마음에 합당했다는 것입니다. 즉 하나님께서 사람에게 뜻하신 것과 같은 것을 구했다는 것입니다. 그렇다는 것은 하나님의 정체성을 바로 알고 그 의와 그 나라를 구했다는 것입니다. 이것은 이스라엘 민족 뿐 아니라 하나님을 믿는 모든 사람의 마음 가짐이어야 하는 것입니다.

그러므로 사사기를 이스라엘 민족이 반복적으로 하나님을 배반하는 바보 같은 역사라고만 볼 것이 아니라, 우리가 하나님의 의를 버린다는 것은 하나님께 악을 행하는 것이고, 이방민족과 이방신의 의를 좇는다는 것입니다. 그렇게 되면 하나님의 의를 나타내기 위하여 창조된 사람들은 당연히 그 정체성과 맏지 않는 것을 취하려 하므로 곤고함을 당하게 된다는 것입니다. 

그리고 그것이 자기의 것이 아님을 알고 하나님께 구하면 하나님께서 들으신다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 들으셨다는 것은 하나님께서 사람에게 주시고자 하는 것, 사람에게 기대하고 사람을 지으실 때 가지셨던 뜻을 구했다는 것입니다. 바로 이런 구조가 사사기 전반에 흐르고 있는 구조고, 오늘 우리가 교훈으로 받아야 하는 것입니다.

그렇게 하나님의 일을 걱정하는 사람들의 한결 같은 특징이 무엇이냐 하면 그것은 형식적인 것, 격식에 관한 것, 행위에 관한 것, 하나님께 소유를 드리는 모양과 정성에 관한 것으로 하나님을 위한다는 것입니다. 하나 같이 롯의 두 딸이 하나님의 후손이 끊어질까봐 걱정을 한 것과 일치합니다. 다들 모압과 암몬의 본성으로 하나님을 믿고 있는 증거가 바로 그런 것입니다.

그렇게 ‘형식과 격식과 행위와 모양을 어떻게 하느냐?’로 하나님께 예배가 온전해지고, 신앙이 온전해진다는 사람들의 마음이 모압의 본성이고, 이스라엘 백성들의 마음이었다는 것입니다. 이스라엘 백성들의 마음 안에 모압 족속과 같이 하나님을 걱정하는 마음을 가졌더니 그 생각의 뿌리인 모압 족속이 쳐들어 온 것입니다. 그리고 이방 민족이 쳐들어왔으니 곤고한 것은 물론이고, 더 나아가서 왕 같이 되어 조공을 받기까지 한 것입니다. 결국 자기 생각의 주인을 섬긴 꼴이 된 것입니다.

그 모압의 본성, 하나님께서 표현한 세상의 형식으로 하나님의 일을 걱정하는 그 마음을 하나님의 신이 임한 사사가 나와서 그의 왼손의 칼로 모압의 본성을 죽였다는 것입니다. 이것은 모압이 형식이듯 왼손 또한 형식이나, 에훗이라는 왼손잡이는 하나님의 신이 임한 사사라는 것입니다. 먼저 그 나라와 그 의를 구하니 모든 것을 주시더라는 것입니다.

하나님을 믿는다는 것은 성경을 지키는 것이라고 할 수 있습니다. 아니 그렇습니다. 성경을 지켜야 하나님을 믿는 것이 되고, 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 것이 된다고 하니, 사람들은 어떻게든 지켜내어야 한다고 여깁니다. 문제는 ‘어떻게 성경을 지켜낼 것인가?’입니다. 하나님의 법은 하나님의 의가 사람 안에 임하면 그 의가 육신의 행동으로 나타나게 되는 법입니다. 하나님의 의가 생명의 본성이 되는 거듭남으로 사는 사람은 무심한 듯 사는데 살다보니 성경이 지켜지는 세계입니다.

그런데 사람들은 이 법은 버리고 행위로 성경을 지키면 된다고 생각을 합니다. 그러나 이는 방향도 법도 다른 것이라 잘 되지 않습니다. 그래서 많은 의문이 있고 늘 부족합니다. 그렇다보니 그 부족함을 메우지 않으면 안 된다고, 그러면 하나님의 일이 되지 않는다고 염려해서 자신들이 나섭니다. 겟세마네 동산의 베드로와 같이.

그렇다면 왜 예수님을 알지 못한 것일까요? 그것은 예수님이 투명인간이었거나, 사람들이 자신을 알아보는지 시험하시기 위하여 위장을 하고 다니셔서 그런 것이 아니라, 각 사람들이 ‘하나님의 아들은 이런 존재’라는 자신만의 <그리스도의 상(象)>을 가지고 있었는데 안타깝게도 그것이 하나님이 보내신 예수님과는 달랐던 것입니다.

‘하나님 아들의 상(象)’, 곧 ‘하나님의 아들은 이럴 것이다.’라며 자신들이 본 적도 없는 분의 정체성이 더 많이 가진 자가 선이 되는 세상의 법에 따라 성경을 더 많이 안다고 할 수 있는 바리새인과 서기관들에 의하여 설계되는 것에 대하여 세상의 가치관을 가진 사람들은 용인하고 믿었던 것입니다.

문제는 하나님의 말씀이 육신이 되어 오신 예수님은 사람들이 세상의 가치관 아래서 설계하고 정의내린 하나님 아들의 모습과는 판이하게 달랐다는 것입니다. 사람들은 하나님의 아들이라면 자신들과 다를 것이라고 생각했습니다. 죄도 짓지 않고, 똥도 누지 않을 것 같았던 것입니다. 그런데 정작 예수님은 죄인, 그것도 사형수가 되어 십자가에서 못 박혀서 돌아가셨습니다.

사람들이 설계한 예수님의 모습을 가장 잘 설명한 것이 바로 40일 금식을 마치신 예수님을 시험한 마귀의 말입니다. “네가 하나님의 아들이라면~~?”이란 그 단서들이 바로 사람들이 가진 하나님 아들에 대한 개념인 것입니다. 그리고 그것은 지금 대부분의 사람들이 가진 하나님 아들에 대한 상(象, image) 역시 그 때 그 마귀의 말과 100% 동일합니다.

하나님의 아들이라면 돌로 떡을 만들 수 있고, 높은 곳에서 뛰어 내려도 죽지 않을 것이라는 그 마귀의 말이 오늘도 그런 능력이 없는 사람들, 그리고 그 능력과 같이 세상 가치관으로 사는 이들이 흠모할 만한 어떤 것도 없이 하나님의 아들이라고 한다는 것은 불경스러움이 된다는 그 가치관은 예나 지금이나 다를 바가 없습니다.

예수님께서는 당시 가장 극형인 십자가에 못 박혀 죽는 형벌을 받았습니다. 말씀이 육신이 되어 오신 하나님의 아들이 세상 가치관에 의하여 흉악범이 되었다는 것입니다. 그 이유는 예수님께서 흉악한 범죄 행위를 저질러서가 아닙니다. 세상 사람들이 가진 하나님 아들의 상(象)이나 또 종교적 관점에서 볼 때도 도무지 어느 한 구석도 하나님 아들이라고 인정해 줄 만한 것이 없다는 이유 그 하나였습니다. 그런 주제에 자신이 하나님의 아들이라고 하니 그것이 바로 “죄목”이었다는 것입니다.

가난한 목수의 아들, 제사장이나 서기관이나 바리새인과 같이 율법에 대하여 알지도, 지키지도 못하며, 하나님의 아들이라면 절대로 어울릴 것이라 여겼던 죄인과 창녀와 세리(당시의 개념으로 매국노)와 하나님의 저주를 받았다고 여기는 각종 병자들과 어울리는 예수님은 더 많이 가지고 이루어야 선이 되는(세상적이든 종교적이든) 가치관으로는 도저히 하나님의 아들이라고 용납할 수 없었던 것입니다.

그런데 그 예수가 기적을 일으키더라는 것입니다. 병자를 고치고 바다 위를 걸으며 죽은 자를 살리더라는 것입니다. 그러니 더 죽여야 했던 것입니다. 하나님 아들이라고 할 만한 자격이 없는데 자신들도 할 수 없는 것을 이루어내더라는 것입니다. 마치 의사 면허가 없는 사람이 불치병을 고치는 것을 보고 있는 의사들의 심정과 같았다는 것입니다. 그래서 그들은 예수님을 고발하고 죽였던 것입니다.

하지만 예수님께서는 육신의 병을 고치기 위해서, 또 죽은 육신을 살리기 위해서, 또 육신이 바다 위를 걷는 것을 보이시기 위하여 이 땅에 오신 것이 아닙니다. 하나님의 말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 왔으나 보지 못하는 맹인 같은 우리의 상태, 예수님께서 우리와 함께 살아가나 느끼지 못하는 문둥병을 고치기 위하여 오셨고, 또 하나님이 보실 때 도무지 그 창조 목적대로 살지 못하기에 죽은 것과 같은 인생들이 하나님의 목적 안에서 생명을 얻도록 하시기 위하여 이 땅에 오셨으며, 세상 가치관 속에서 살기에 바다 같은 세상을 극복하지 못하는 사람들이 세상을 이길 수 있는 사람의 정체성이 무엇인지 보이시기 위하여 바다 위를 걸으셨다는 것을 사람들이 세상의 가치관으로 보고서 오해한 것입니다.

어쨌거나 사람들은 자기들의 안목으로 살다보니 예수님을 알지 못하는 것입니다. 더 많이 가지고 더 많이 이루는 것이 선한 것이기에 더 많이 가지고 더 많이 이룬 사람이 자기 위에 오르는 것을 인정하면서 자신도 그렇게 되기를 바라는 안목으로 낮아지고 섬기러 오신 예수님을 알아 볼 수는 없는 것이기 때문입니다.
