(요 2) 가나 혼인잔치 – 예수님을 믿는 믿음

요한복음 2장에는 예수님께서 물로 포도주를 만든 기적을 말씀하고 있습니다. 그리고 이 기적에 대하여 요한사도는 예수님의 첫 기적이라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 그리고 이 일로 인하여 제자들이 예수님을 믿었다고 기록하고 있습니다. 하지만 예수님께서 십자가에 달리시고 부활하신 얼마까지도 제자들은 예수님을 온전히 믿는 것은 아니었습니다. 즉 자기 기준으로 믿었습니다. 그런데 요한 사도는 예수님이 첫 기적을 일으키시므로 제자들이 예수님을 믿었다고 말씀하고 있습니다.

이는 보는 시각에 따라선 가나 혼인잔치의 기적을 본 제자들이 예수님은 자기들이 바라는 것을 해결해 주실 분으로 믿었었다는 것으로 이해할 수도 있습니다. 예수님께서 십자가를 지실 때 즈음, 야고보의 어미가 두 아들이 세상 나라 이스라엘의 임금이 된 예수님의 좌우에 앉는 사람이 되기를 바란 것이나, 예수님 잡히시는 날까지 예수께서 이스라엘을 정치적으로 로마에서 독립시키고 또 백성들의 먹고 사는 문제를 해결하실 것이라 기대하고 있었던 베드로가 가졌던 믿음을 이야기 하는 것일 수 있습니다.

하지만 역설적으로 본다면, 그렇게 민족의 독립에 대한 갈망을 가지고 칼을 품고 다니고 세상 나라 이스라엘의 높은 신하가 되기를 바라는 마음으로 예수님을 믿었던 것도 예수님을 믿는 믿음의 범주 안에 있는 것이라는 말씀이기도 한 것입니다. 물론 그런 믿음만으로 예수님께서 이 땅에 오신 목적이자 사람을 향한 하나님의 온전하신 뜻을 믿는 것이 되지는 않겠지만, 그러나 그 온전한 믿음으로의 여정에 속한 것이라는 말씀이기는 한 것입니다.

즉 신앙이라는 것은 큰물을 건너는 것이긴 하나 연결된 과정이라는 것입니다. 예수님을 자기 목적을 이루어줄 도깨비 방망이로 여기는 믿음은 온전하고 하나님이 뜻하신 목적은 아니지만 하나님을 온전히 믿는 여정의 시작일 수 있고, 또 같은 과정이라고 할 수 있다는 것입니다. 

믿음의 순례자는 마치 서울행 기차가 달리는 경부선이라는 믿음의 여정에 놓인 열차와 같아서 부산이나 대구를 지나는 열차는 서울이라는 온전함에 미치지는 못하지만 경부선 위에 있다는 것과 같다는 것입니다. 경부선 위를 달리면 서울에 도착하게 되는 것처럼, 예수님의 신비한 기적을 보고 그 기적을 의지하려고 예수님을 믿는 것은 온전한 믿음은 아니지만 그 믿음도 온전한 믿음으로 가는 여정 위에 있다는 측면에서 보면 예수님을 믿는다는 것, 예수께서 이 땅에 오신 목적이자 사람을 향한 하나님의 뜻을 믿는 것이라고도 할 수 있다는 것입니다.

사실 이 가나의 혼인잔치라는 사건 안에는 그런 뜻이 많이 포함되어 있습니다. 항아리에 물을 채우는 것이 그것입니다. 항아리에 채워지는 물은 아귀에 차기 전 까지는 포도주가 아닙니다. 그러나 포도주가 되지 않았다고, 아직 그 믿음이 온전한 지경에 이르지 않았다고 그것이 포도주가 아니라고 또 믿음이 아니라고 말하긴 어렵다는 것입니다. 오히려 큰 범주에서 보면 그것도 포도주고 믿음이라고 할 수 있다는 것입니다.

그렇다고 일방적으로 어떤 목적, 어떤 시각이라도 예수를 믿는다고만 하면 포도주 곧 그리스도의 정체성을 나타낼 수 있는 믿음이라고 할 수는 없습니다. 절대적인 조건이 하나 있는데 그것은 다름이 아니라 바로 말씀에 순종하는 것입니다. 가나 혼인잔치의 사건 안에서도 예수님께서 하신 말씀을 믿고 순종한 종의 순종이 없었다면 포도주는 만날 수 없었을 것입니다.

그러므로 모든 사람이 예수님을 만나고 믿기 시작할 때는 다 자기 목적을 가지고 시작합니다. 그것은 온전한 믿음은 아니지만 가능성이란 측면에서는 온전한 믿음이라고 할 수 있습니다. 그리고 그것이 진정한 믿음, 곧 그리스도의 정체성(포도주)을 표현해 낼 수 있기까지 말씀에 순종하므로 말씀을 항아리 곧 자기 자신에게 채우는 순종이 있으면 되는 것입니다. 그랬을 때 포도주가 된다는 것입니다. 그리스도(a christ)가 된다는 것입니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 많습니다. 그러나 예수님의 제자들조차 오순절 성령강림 이전에는 예수님에 대하여 알지 못했다고 할 수 있습니다. 부활한 예수님을 만나고도 엠마오로 도망가듯 하던 제자들이었습니다.

그럼에도 요한복음을 기록한 사도 요한의 눈에는 처음 예수님의 기적, 물로 포도주를 만드는 그 기적을 보고서 제자들이 예수님을 믿었던 마음, 오순절까지는 순전하지 않았던 그 믿음이지만 그 마음과 믿음의 여정이 항아리에 물을 채우듯 한 과정이라는 것을 알았던 것입니다. 그래서 예수님을 믿었다고 말씀하고 있습니다.

이는 오늘 우리에게도 시사하는 바가 큽니다. 먼저는 예수님을 믿어 그 삶이 포도주 즉 예수 그리스도의 성품을 닮은 삶이되기까지 말씀을 채우는 순종의 과정이 있다는 것을 알고 말씀을 듣는 사람들은 그날까지 순종하는 마음을 가져야 한다는 것과, 사람은 누구나 그런 가능성을 가지고 예수님을 믿기 시작하므로 말씀을 전하는 사람, 그리스도의 성품을 가진 사람은 그날까지 기다리고 그 믿음의 가능성을 인정해야 한다는 것을 생각해야 한다는 것입니다.
