우리는 어떤 교회에 다녀야 할까?

하나님을 믿는 많은 사람들이 교회에 대한 갈등을 가지고 있다. 헌금에 시험 들고, 타락한 목회자에 시험 들고, 교회 세습에 시험 들고 있다. 그래서 많은 이들이 교회에 다니는 것에 회의를 가지고 있다. 앞서 열거한 것들은 참 우리를 난감하게 한다. 하지만 그런 것으로 인하여 시험에 든다는 것은 안타까운 일이지만 사실 교회의 문제는 그것이 아니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 눈에 보이는 것이기 때문이다.

교회가 타락했다는 것은 이어 언급하겠지만 눈에 보이는 것을 본질로 신앙하기 때문인데, 눈에 보이는 것, 생각해보면 세상에도 있는 일들이 교회에 있다는 것을 인하여 교회가 타락했다고 말하는 것은 문제의 본질이 아니다. 그것은 어떤 면에서 보면 교회의 자충수다. 교회가 늘 눈에 보이는 것을 본질로 가르치다 보니 그렇게 배운 사람들의 눈에 보이는 것이 전부로 각인되어 교회가 내홍을 겪는 것이라고 봐야 하기 때문이다.

그러나 이런 저런 이유로 인하여 교회가 타락한 것으로 인한 피해는 어이없게도 교인들이 고스란히 보고 있다는 것이다. 이것이야 말로 안타까운 것이다. 타락한 교회와 교회를 세상의 방식으로 시험 치고 자격증을 얻어서 제대로 된 타락의 모습을 보여준 이들이야 자기 죄에 빠져 있으니 자업자득이겠지만 하나님을 알고자 간절함을 가진 교인들은 무슨 죄가 있으랴? 단지 교회를 잘못 선택한 것으로 영혼이 팔려가고 있으니 말이다.

그러면 일반적인 우리들, 교역자나 당회원이 아닌 우리 일반 교인들, 평교인들은 어떤 교회에 다녀야 할 것인가의 문제가 대두되는 것이다. 그리고 우리는 여기에 답을 찾아야 한다. 그냥 종교생활을 하는 것이 목적인 사람이 아니라 정말로 하나님을 알고 싶다면, 한번쯤 교회에서 질문했더니 ‘안 보고 믿는 것이 믿음’이라는 답변을 받을 정도의 의문을 가지고 있다면 어떤 교회를 가야할 것인지 생각해봐야 한다는 것이다.

앞서 교회가 타락한 것은 눈에 보이는 것을 본질로 보기 때문이라고 했다. 필자는 블로그의 글에서 늘 말하기를 <세상에서 성공하는 것이 하나님께 영광>이라고 하는 것이 타락의 본질이라고 늘 말해왔다. 그렇게 말하는 이유는 당연히 그것이 사실이기 때문이다. 성경은 보이는 것은 나타난 것으로 말미암은 것이 아니라고 말씀하고 있는데 눈에 보이는 세상의 일이 잘 되는 것을 하나님의 복과 은혜와 영광이라고 여긴다는 것은 그 안목이 눈에 보이는 것을 본질로 본다는 것이다.

예수님께서 금식을 하시고 받으신 시험 중에서 마지막 시험은 천하만물을 보고 그 영광을 얻기 위하여 마귀에게 절하라는 것이었다. 그것은 눈에 보이는 것을 본질로 여기라는 것이었다. 하지만 예수님께서는 그것을 <하나님을 시험하는 것>이라고 규정하셨다. 눈에 보이는 것을 본질로 보는 것은 하나님을 시험하는 것이라는 것이다. 그것이 예수님의 말씀이다.

또 사람들은 먹고 마시는 것은 주님이 다 알아서 한다고 하면서 먹고 입는 것이 잘 되면 하나님의 은혜라고 한다. 알아서 하시는 일을 구원의 은혜나 베푸시는 것으로 여기는 것이다. 하나님이 알아서 하시는 일과 은혜를 구분하지 못하기 때문이다. 하나님의 은혜는 하나님께서 그 성품을 나타내시기 위하여 나를 존재하게 하셨다는 것이고, 알아서 하신다는 것은 존재하게 하셨으니 그 존재가 하나님의 목적을 위하여 살아가는데 필요한 것이 무엇인지 아신다는 것이다. 차를 산 사람이 당연히 기름을 넣어주는 것과 같은 것이다.

그럼에도 불구하고 오늘 우리가 교회에 가면 듣는 말들은 천편일률적으로 성경대로 살면 하나님께서 복을 주신다고 하면서 말하는 그 복이 무엇이냐 하면 육신이 건강하고 사업이 잘 되며 자녀가 성공하고 사회적으로 높은 자리에 이르는 것과 같은 것이다. 그렇다 보니 이사를 하면 목사를 불러서 예배를 드린다. 사업장을 개업해도 그렇다. 목사가 와서 그 집이 또 사업장이 잘 되기를 기원하는 것이다. 교회가 하는 일이 그것이라는 것이다. 웃기는 일이다. 그게 무당이 굿하는 것과 뭐가 다른가?

그러므로 그런 교회는 가지 않는 것이 영적 건강에 좋다. 결국 그런 교회는 세상에서의 성공을 위하여 교회에 우회 투자하라고 하는 것을 말한다. 교회에 헌금하면 사업이 잘 될 것이라고 한다. 교회에 헌금하면 교회가 잘 되지 왜 세상의 사업체가 잘 되겠는가? 잘 된다면 교회에 헌금을 해 가면서까지 사업에 임하는 간절한 마음과 열심 때문이지 교회에 헌금한 것이 어떻게 사업체에 도움이 되겠는가? 게다가 헌금한 것은 세금도 안 떼는데 사업체 지원을 위하여 헌금한 돈이 도움이 될 방법은 없는 것이다.

결론적으로 가지 말아야 할 교회는 정해졌다. 교회에 갔는데 “세상에서 성공하는 것이 하나님께 영광”이라고 가르치면 가지 말아야 한다. 그 교회가 기도하는 것은 늘 하나님이 시키시는 것 잘 할 테니 나 하는 것 도와 달라는 기도일 것이다. 그러면 가지 않아야 한다. 그곳은 교회가 아니기 때문이다. 그곳은 그냥 사당이다. 사당에서 하나님의 이름을 부르는 것일 뿐이다.

그러면 어떤 교회에 가야 할까?

교회는 건물을 먼저 세우고, 자격을 갖춘 사람이 사람을 모으는 곳이 아니다. 교회는 하나님의 의가 자기 생명이 되어 사는 사람들이 자기와 같은 생명과 본성을 가진 사람들을 만나는 것에서 시작되는 것이 교회다. 사도행전을 보고도 이것이 틀렸다고 한다면 그것은 정말로 어리석은 것이다. 교회는 또한 그리스도께서 머리가 되시는 곳이다. 그리스도의 뜻이 행하여 지는 곳이라는 것이다. 그리스도가 누구신가? 세상의 실패자 아닌가? 

예수님은 세상에서 성공한 사람이 아니다. 세상에서는 버린 돌과 같이 보잘 것 없는 존재였다. 세상의 가치관, 세상에서 성공하는 것이 하나님께 영광이라는 가치관으로 볼 때 죄인이고 죽어야 하는 존재시다. 그 그리스도가 머리가 되었다는 것은 교회에 속한 모든 이들이 예수님과 같이 세상에서 성공하여 영광스럽게 되는 것이 아니라, 세상의 기준으로 죄인이 된 사람들이 모일 때 교회라는 것이다. 이것이 진정한 교회의 정체성이고 설립 요건이다. 건물과 목사 라이세스를 가진 사람 그리고 세상에서 성공한 장로가 2명 이상이어야 교회가 되는 것이 아니라는 것이다.

그러나 안타깝게도 그리스도가 머리 되시는 교회가 많지 않다. 그리고 그런 교회를 가려면 항상 이단 시비가 문제다. 그도 그럴 것이 대부분의 이단들도 사실 추구하는 바가 같다. 결국은 세상에서의 성공이고, 또 육신의 평안이다. 그것이 복이라고 또 그것을 신앙의 푯대로 삼는 것은 같다는 것이다. 그렇게 같음에도 불구하고 이단이 되는 것은 같은 복이지만 그것을 추구하는 것에 있어 다수가 동의한 방법에 의하지 않는다는 것 때문이다. 게다가 이단 중에서는 종교를 넘어 사회적 통념상 용납할 수 없는 것들도 많기 때문이다. 그러나 알고 보면 신앙으로 무엇을 지키고 어떤 종교적 신념과 행위 규범이라도 그것이 추구하는 것이 육신의 복락과 세상의 성공이라면 결국 무당이 굿하는 것과 같은 것이다.

따라서 우리는 교회가 무엇을 이야기하는지를 보고 선택해야 한다. “성경을 지켜서 세상에서 복 받자” 틀렸다. 성경이 아니라도 그 교회가 말하는 대로 하면 얻는 것이 무엇인지를 봐야 한다. 그것이 결국 세상의 성공이고 육신의 복락에 관한 것이라면 그곳은 진정한 교회가 아니다. 결국 <세상에서 성공하는 것이 하나님께 영광>이며 그것을 위하여 교회가 시키는 대로 묻지도 따지지도 말고 하라고 할 것이다. 왜냐하면 그들은 ‘너도 결국 세상에서 성공하려고 온 것 아니냐?, 여기에 우리가 시키는 대로 해서 성공한 사람 많으니 너는 일단 믿으라’는 마음을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 그러므로 그런 곳에 가면 안 되는 것이다.

우리가 찾고 다녀야 하는 교회는 그곳에 갔더니 하나님이 누군지 알 수 있는 곳, 또 나는 누구며 인생의 목적이 하나님으로부터 왔다는 것을 알게 되는 곳으로 가야한다. 그런 곳이 없다면 만들어도 된다. 그러면 정말로 하나님을 찾아서 본토 아비집을 떠난 이들을 만나게 될 것이기 때문이다. 본토 아비집이 다른 곳이 아니다. 세상에서 성공하려고 하나님을 믿는 신앙이 바로 본토 아비집이다.

사람에게 교회는 반드시 다녀야 하는 곳이다. 그래야 하는 것은 교회에 간다는 것은 그 사람이 하나님께서 사람을 만든 목적을 안다는 것이기 때문이다. 그런 사람이 모여서 된 곳이 교회기 때문이다. 그러니 교회에 간다는 것은 그 사람이라는 것이고, 또 하나는 그런 사람을 만나고 그들의 삶을 볼 수 있다는 것이다. 그것을 보는 것은 십자가에 달린 예수님을 보는 것과 같은 것이다. 진정한 교회는 세상에서 성공하는 것이 복이고 영광이라는 가치관을 가진 사람들이 볼 때 죄인들이 모여 있을 것이기 때문이다. 

십자가에 달린 예수님의 모습이 그것이고, 우리에게 지고 오라고 하신 십자가가 또한 그것이기 때문이다. 그것을 본 사람은 그 영상이 땅에 씨가 심기듯 그 심령에 심길 것이고 그 심긴 것에 성령이 역사하셔서 그 사람도 같은 생명을 가진 사람이 될 것이다. 그것이 전도인 것이다. 그것이 생명이 전해지는 교회의 본 모습인 것이다. 우리는 바로 그런 교회를 다녀야 하는 것이다. 아니 그것이 교회니 교회에 간다면 그곳에 가야 하는 것이다.
