미가의 신상과 제사장

미가라는 사람이 있었습니다. 미가의 어머니가 자기 아들이 은 1100을 잃어버렸다면서 아들을 저주했는데 아들이 그 은을 가지고 있었습니다. 그러자 그 어미가 그 은을 여호와께 드린다면서 은으로 신상을 부어 만들고 제사장의 옷 에봇과 드라빔(가족의 신상?)을 만들었다고 했습니다. 그리고 미가는 자기 아들 중에서 하나를 제사장으로 삼았다가 유대로부터 온 레위인 소년을 보고서 그를 제사장으로 세웠습니다.

그리고 이 일은 거기서 그치지 않고, 땅을 구하는 단 지파가 미가가 세운 제사장을 데리고 가서 자기들의 제사장으로 삼기까지 번집니다. 그리고 성경은 미가가 이렇게 했던 것은 왕이 없었으므로 사람들이 자기가 좋은 대로 행했기 때문이라고 설명하고 있습니다. 사람이 자기 마음에 가진 기준으로 선하다고 생각하는 일이 자기 만의 신상을 만들고 자기만의 제사를 만든다는 것을 말씀하고 있습니다.

자기 좋은 대로 한다는 것은 자신을 다스리는 것이 없다는 것입니다. 그 다스림은 사람 밖에 있는 왕과 같은 권력이 대표적이겠지만 더 실질적인 것은 사람 안에 있는 것입니다. 모든 사람은 자기 안에 있어 자기가 옳다고 여기는 것을 자기 몸으로 행하기 때문입니다. 그리고 알고 보면 그것이 바로 자기 좋은대로 행하는 것입니다.

사람들은 전자제품이나 기계와 같은 것은 사서 사용하다가 자신이 뜻한 대로 움직이지 않으면 ‘이것이 자기 맘대로 움직이네.’라고 말합니다. 때로는 아예 작동하지 않는 것이 더 나을 때도 많습니다. 컴퓨터만 해도 그렇습니다. 이유도 모르게 작동하면 그야말로 답답하기 짝이 없습니다. 

그렇듯 사람들은 그 본성 안에 어떤 것이든 존재하는 목적을 기대하는 것이 있다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 당연히 사람이 자신이 만든 물건과 사용하는 것에 목적대로 작동하는 것을 기대하는 것은 하나님께서 사람을 그렇게 만들었기 때문입니다. 그러므로 사람도 역시 자신이 존재하는 이유가 있다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 진화론과 같이 사람이 스스로 진화했다면 그 목적이 어디에 있는지 알 수 없습니다. 진화는 원리를 떠나 존재의 목적을 설명할 수 없는 것입니다. 

하나님께서는 이미 이스라엘 백성들이 사사의 시대를 맞기 이전에 모세를 통하여 제사장의 규례는 물론이고 십계명을 주시면서 신상을 만들지 말라고 했음에도 불구하고 왕이 없었기에 사람들이 자기 맘대로 행하므로 하나님께서 원치 않으시는 일들을 아무렇지 않게 행하였습니다. 이런 모든 일의 원인이 왕이 없었기 때문이라고 하고 있습니다.

그런데도 하나님께서는 사람들이 왕을 원할 때에 싫어하셨습니다. 왕이 없어서 사람들이 자기 맘대로 하나님의 계명을 어기는데 왜 왕을 세우는 것을 싫어하셨을까요? 그것은 왕이라는 존재는 결국 사람이 자기 마음으로 왕으로 인정할 때 왕이 되는 것이기 때문입니다. 아무리 왕이 있어도 사람이 그를 왕으로 인정하지 않으면 소용없는 것입니다. 반대로 왕이 없어도 자기 마음에 순종하는 바가 있다면 왕이 있는 것 이상으로 강력한 통치력을 발휘하는 것이 사람입니다.

하나님께서 왕을 세우는 것을 반대하셨던 것은 하나님께 순종하는 사람이라면 왕이 필요 없음을 아셨기 때문입니다. 사람이 자기 마음에 하나님의 법에 순종하고자 하는 마음이 있으면 굳이 왕이 없어도 하나님의 법을 지키고 순종하면서 살 것이며, 그렇게 한 하나님의 법에 순종하는 사람들이 모였다면 정치적인 어떤 조직이나 기구가 없어도 충분히 평안을 누릴 것이기 때문입니다.

사람이 우상을 만드는 것은 확실성을 확보하기 위함입니다. 마음에 믿는 어떤 신이 있어도 그것에 대한 확신이 없으면 그 확신을 대변할 어떤 신상을 만드는 것입니다. 하나님을 믿는 사람들도 하나님에 대한 확신이 서지 않기 때문에 신상을 만들기도 합니다. 그러니까 우상은 약속어음과 같은 것입니다. 서로 믿는 것이 확실하다면 보증 같은 것은 필요 없는 것입니다. 

오늘날의 사회를 신용사회라고 합니다. 그런데 신용사회라면서 갖가지 인증이나 보안을 얼마나 까다롭게 하는지 모릅니다. 믿는데, 신용사회인데 뭔 보안이 그리 필요하겠습니까? 결국 사람들이 말하는 신용 곧 믿는 것은 서로에 대한 믿음이 아니라 서로를 믿지 않는 것을 보장하는 보안과 인증을 믿고 있는 것입니다. 우상이나 신상이 바로 그 짝인 것입니다.

오늘 날 사람들이 물체로서 하나님의 신상을 만들지 않는다고 미가와 다른 것은 아닙니다. 요즈음은 자기 행위를 우상으로 섬깁니다. 하나님을 믿는 것에 확신이 없으므로 자기 행위가 어떤 것을 하고 있으면 하나님을 잘 믿는다고 여긴다는 것입니다. 그래서 때로 교회에, 예배에 피곤해서 깜박 잠들어 가지 못하면 신앙이 나태해졌다고 말합니다. 자기 신앙의 확신과 증거를 자기 행위에 두고 있다는 증거입니다. 그런 것도 다 우상입니다. 달리 사람의 행위가 하나님 앞에 의롭게 될 수 없다고 하시는 것이 아닙니다.

예수님께서 안식일을 지키지 않으셨지만 자신이 안식일의 주인이기에 지키는 것이라고 하신 것과 같이 오늘도 신상을 만들지 않아도, 또 자신이 하나님을 믿는 척도를 자신의 행위나 습관에서 증거를 찾지 않아도 될 정도로 확실한 믿음이 있을 때 비로소 하나님을 믿는 것이 되는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그것은 자기 마음을 다스리는 확실한 왕이 있다는 증거이기 때문입니다. 그러면 당연히 자기 좋은 대로 행하지 않고 하나님이 뜻하시는대로 행하실 것이기 때문입니다.
