믿음의 본질은 정체성을 믿는 것이다.

한 때는 살만 한 집의 딸이었던 아가씨가 40을 바라보는 나이에 결혼을 하게 되었다. 앞서 말했듯 한 때 살만 했지만 현재는 넉넉하지 않아서 그 아가씨가 자신이 음악 과외를 하면서 가계에 큰 역할을 감당하고 살아 왔다. 그 아가씨는 내가 잘 아는 사람으로 아주 착하고 훌륭한 청년이다.

그런데 결혼 소식과 함께 들려온 신랑의 나이가 11살이 작다고 한다. 그게 전부다. 아직 주변의 사람들이 그녀의 신랑이 어떤 사람인지 잘 알지 못한다. 그런데 단지 11살 연하의 남자라는 사실 만으로 그녀가 남자를 밝히는 사람이라는 소문을 내고 있는 사람이 있다. 그건 참 어이없는 일이다.

오늘 이 이야기는 한 아가씨에 관한 이야기가 아니다. 이것은 우리가 사람을 믿을 때, 아니 무엇을 믿을 때 무엇을 믿느냐의 문제에 관한 것이다. 대부분의 기독교인들이 하나님을 믿는 것에 있어 앞서 이야기한 아가씨를 험담하는 사람들의 모습을 가지고 있다. 즉 하나님의 정체성을 믿는 것이 아니라 하나님께서 무엇을 자기에게 해 주시는지를 핵심으로 삼고 있다는 것이다. 이것은 슬픈 일이다. 왜냐하면 그것은 하나님을 믿는 것이 아니다. 그냥 하나님을 이용하는 것이다.

하나님을 믿는 것은 하나님의 정체성을 믿는 것이다. ‘하나님께서 내게 어떤 행위를 하시느냐?’를 기준으로 믿는 것은 하나님을 믿는 것이 아니다. 그런 것은 자판기에게나 기대할 일이지 하나님께 기대할 것이 아니라는 것이다. 하나님을 믿으려면 <하나님이 어떤 분인지>를 바로 알아야 한다. 그리고 그것을 믿어야 한다. 그럴 때 하나님을 믿음에 있어 어려움이 없다. 누군지를 알아야 그 사람의 행위를 믿을 수 있는 것이다.

하나님은 존재의 신이시다. 근본적으로 그 이름이 <여호와>다. ‘나는 스스로 있는 자’라고 하신 분이다. 그리고 늘 우리에게 ‘너는 나를 누구라 하느냐?’를 물으신다. 너와 나의 관계가 무엇인지, 나는 너에게 누구며, 너는 나에게 또 누구냐는 것이다. 그 관계의 정체성이 정해지면 모든 것은 다 정해진다. 하나님이 누구신지를 바로 알면 하나님께서 나를 옥에 가두어도 또 대통령을 만들어도 하나님에 대한 생각과 감사함이 달라지지 않는다. 

하지만 그것이 아니라 하나님께서 나에게 무엇을 해 주시는지를 생각하고 믿는 사람은 사건 여하에 따라 하나님에 대한 감정이 달라진다. 믿음이 달라진다는 것이다. 그러니까 믿음이 약해지지 않도록 열심히 뭔가를 해야 한다고 말하고 다짐하고 노력한다. 그게 바로 행위의 신앙이고 율법 신앙이다. 그리고 그것이 바로 회 칠한 무덤과 같은 신앙이며, 외식하는 자요 노릇하는 자인 것이다.

사람이 되었던 하나님이 되었던 그 무엇을 믿는 것은 그로부터 나온 행위를 믿는 것이 아니다. 표현된 것이 아니라 그 사람이, 또 하나님이 어떤 분인지를 믿는 것이 본질이다. 아들의 행위가 못났다고 호적에서 없어지지 않듯(설사 호적에서 지워도 아들은 아들이다) 행위는 아무 것도 아니다. 11살 연하의 남자와 결혼한다고 왜 색녀인가? 그게 아니라면 하나님께서 나를 행여 가난하게 한다고 시험에 든 것이겠는가? 그것은 아니다.

우리가 하나님을 믿는 것은 절대적으로 하나님이 어떤 분인지 아는 것이 먼저다. 그것이 먼저 그 나라와 의를 구하는 것이다. 그것이 믿음으로 의롭게 되는 것이다. 그것이 바로 예수만 있으면 된다는 것이다. 그리고 그것을 믿었기에, 그가 누구인지, 하나님이 어떤 분인지 믿었기에 일어나는 일들, 행여 그것을 세상은 배신이라 한다고 해도 그것을 감당하는 것, 그것이 십자가를 지는 것이다. 그게 믿음이고 신앙인 것이다.
