요나를 마치며…

성경 요나는 참 동화 같은 성경입니다. 하나님께 불순종하는 선지자라는 것도 재밌고, 불순종했더니 바다에 풍랑이 일고, 그래서 바다에 던져지고, 그리고 물고기가 나타나서 불순종한 요나를 삼키고 요나가 기도했더니 큰 고기가 요나를 육지에 뱉어내고, 그래서 다시 하나님이 시킨 것을 했더니 하나님의 뜻대로 되자 요나는 하나님께 반항하는 동화 같은 성경입니다.

기본적으로 성경 요나를 보면서 불순종에 대하여 상기해 보는 것도 훌륭하고, 또 하나님께서는 이방인의 도읍이라도 그 안에 있는 사람들을 사랑하셔서 구원하신다는 것만 알아도 훌륭한 감동이 되는 성경입니다. 그러나 알고 보면 그 이상의 의미가 가득한 성경이라는 것을 몇 개의 글을 통하여 말씀을 드렸습니다.

성경 요나가 가진 큰 의미를 두 가지로 나누어 볼까 합니다. 하나는 ‘하나님께 불순종한다는 것이 어떤 것인가?’ 라는 것이고, 또 하나는 요나의 불순종의 원인에서 볼 수 있는 것으로 사람이 하나님의 구원에 관여하고자 하는 마음을 가지고 있다는 것에 관한 것입니다. 그 중에서 더 핵심적인 것이 있다면 후자가 아닐까 생각합니다. 요나의 불순종의 근본 이유가 그것이기도 한 것이기 때문입니다.

요나가 불순종을 하고서 ‘하나님의 낮’을 피했다고 했습니다. 성경 창세기에서도 아담이 하나님이 먹지 말라고 한 선악과를 먹고서 눈이 밝아진 다음에 숨었는데 그때도 ‘하나님의 낯’을 피하여 숨었다고 했습니다. 즉 하나님의 생각과 성품과 정체성을 피하여 자기가 생각하는 대로 갔다는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 요나가 순종하지 않은 ‘하나님의 명령’인 것입니다.

우리는 이 요나의 불순종이 바로 우리의 불순종으로 받을 수 있어야 합니다. 많은 사람들이 가진 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 하나님의 정체성과는 동떨어진 믿음을 가지고 있기 때문입니다. 하나님은 존재의 하나님이시고, 세상을 창조하시고 실수하지 않으시는 하나님인데, 많은 신앙인들은 하나님 앞에 자기가 성경(특히 신약)을 몸으로 지켜내고 있다는 것을 드리고 있고, 하나님이 세상을 경영하시는 경영에 이래라 저래라 간섭하고 있다는 것입니다.

하나님께서는 니느웨의 백성들이 이방인인지, 유대인인지를 기준으로 구원을 결정하신 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서는 사람이라면 누구라도 하나님께서 사람을 지으신 목적을 위하여 그 삶을 살아내기를 바라시는 하나님이십니다. 그런데 사람들은 사람의 겉모습을 보고서 하나님의 구원에 대하여 자기의 기준으로 판단을 합니다. 그것이 요나가 보여준 불순종의 본질입니다.

특히나 기독교 사상이 지배하는 많은 자본주의 사회에서는 <가난=하나님의 재앙>이라는 공식이 깔려 있습니다. 사업이 잘못되면 이내 “하나님께 가서 기도해야 한다.”고 하거나 그 사람이 교회에 다니지 않으면 “교회에 나가야 한다.”라고 하는 것이 그것입니다. 이는 사업 외에도 건강이나 각종 가정사에 대해서도 같은 견해를 가지고 있습니다. 하나님의 정체성과는 전혀 다르게 하나님을 알고 있는 것입니다. 하나님을 믿는 것이 아니라 자기 하나님을 무당처럼 섬기는 것입니다.

이런 신앙의 모습은 기독교 이미 오래 전부터 신앙의 근간이 되었습니다. 이것은 하나님 앞에서 우리의 행위가 어떤 것이냐에 따라 우리의 삶이 달라진다는 것입니다. 즉 하나님을 행위와 소유를 드리는 정도에 따라 복이나 재앙을 주시는 신으로 알고 있다는 것입니다. 하나님의 정체성을 왜곡한 것입니다. 이렇게 하나님의 정체성과 다른 믿음을 가지는 것이 바로 하나님의 낯을 피하는 것입니다. 그리고 그것은 바다와 같은 세상과 하나가 되는 신앙이고 믿음입니다.

많은 사람들이 교회에 가서 하나님을 만나려고 합니다. 그런데 너무나 많은 교회가 바다와 같이 되었습니다. 앞서 이야기한 것과 같이 하나님께 무엇(봉사)을 하면 하나님이 갚으시고, 또 자신의 소유를 하나님의 일(교회)에 헌금하면 하나님이 복을 주신다고 합니다. 하나님을 공로와 소유의 드린 정도에 반응하시는 하나님을 알고 있습니다. 이것이 바로 바다에 던져진 모습입니다.

그리고 우리가 성경 요나를 통해서 상고해야할 두 번째 의미는 하나님의 모든 행사에 대하여 그 주권을 인정하는 것이 하나님을 믿는 것이라는 것입니다. 요나는 자기 생각에 니느웨가 구원을 받으면 안 된다고 생각했기에 하나님께서 니느웨에 베푸신 구원을 못마땅하게 여겼습니다. 반면에 하나님께서 자신에게 베푸신 작은 은혜인 박 넝쿨은 자기를 위하여 있어야 한다고 불만을 늘어놓습니다. 

그러나 요나가 멸망하기를 바란 니느웨의 백성들도 요나를 위했던 박 넝쿨도 모두 하나님의 주권 아래 있는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 요나에게 그것을 말씀하십니다. 하지만 요나는 자기의 뜻을 잘 굽히지는 않았습니다. 그런 면에서 본다면 그렇게 반항하는 요나를 벌하지 않으심도 니느웨 백성을 구하시는 마음과 같은 것일지도 모르겠습니다.

사람들은 자신도 모르게 사람을 구분합니다. 그가 적국의 사람인지, 또 행실은 바른지, 청렴하고 도덕적이며 공의로운지를 생각합니다. 그리고 그 기준으로 하나님께 ‘저 사람은 잘 되면 좋겠다.’ 혹은 ‘저런 인간들은 벌을 받아야 돼’라고 말합니다. 그러나 그런 모든 기준은 사람에게서 난 것입니다. 요나가 니느웨 백성을 보는 것도 같은 안목입니다.

하지만 하나님께서는 그런 모든 사람도 그의 경영 아래 두십니다. 하나님께서 이 세상을 만드시고 경영하시는 목적은 오직 하나입니다. <하나님이 어떤 분인지 나타내는 것>입니다. 그것에 합당하면 선하고 의로운 것이지만, 그것이 아니라면 세상에서 그 어떤 찬사를 받는 것이라고 해도 다 소용없는 것입니다. 오히려 하나님의 목적과는 다른 관점에서 의로움과 선함과 도덕적인 것과 청렴한 것을 주장하는 것이 하나님의 낯을 피하고 그 정체성을 왜곡하는 것입니다.

그렇다고 사람들이 생각하는 의로움과 선함이 모두 하나님과 다른 것은 아닙니다. 하나님께서 사람을 만드신 목적이 자기 안에 있는 사람의 삶은 모든 사람들이 선하게 여기고 의롭게 여길만한 삶이 됩니다. 이것을 믿지 않는 사람들이 하나님께서는 세상의 의로움이 아니라 하나님의 의로움이 있다는 말에 발끈하는 것입니다. 살아보지 않았으니 그러는 것입니다. 그런 삶, 그런 생명이 없다는 것이 바로 자기 의를 가진 것이기도 합니다.

요나의 불순종은 하나님의 정체성을 피한 것입니다. 하나님의 정체성을 피했다는 것은 하나님의 본성과 맞지 않는 하나님을 사람들이 생각하는 것입니다. 존재의 하나님을 행위와 소유의 드림을 의로 여기시는 분으로 믿는 것입니다. 그런 가치관은 세상의 가치관입니다. 바다에 던져지는 가치관이고 믿음이고 의로움입니다.

그 세상의 가치관을 가지고서 하나님의 구원을 보면 그 역시 하나님을 이해할 수 없습니다. 세상의 기준으로, 또 자신의 형편과 환경을 기준으로 하나님께서 벌하여 주었으면 좋겠다는 것 같은 사람의 생각이 그것입니다. 하지만 하나님은 그 성품을 나타내시기 위해서라면 온 세상을 물로 다 쓸어버리시기도 하고, 또 언젠가는 불로 심판하시는 분입니다. 

성경 요나를 통해서 우리는 하나님의 주권을 다시 생각해 봅니다. 하나님께서는 세상과 사람을 만드실 때 그 성품을 나타내시려 했습니다. 그리고 그것은 창세전부터 영원까지 변함이 없는 것입니다. 이것을 온전히 알면 요나의 반항에 대한 하나님의 말씀이 온전히 이해가 될 수 있습니다. 그렇게 하나님을 바로 알면, 하나님의 낯을 대하는 것이 기쁨이 될 것입니다. 성경 요나는 그것을 말씀하시는 책입니다.
