(요나 2:10-4:11) 하나님과 논쟁하는 요나

물고기 배에서 육지로 나온 요나는 다시 하나님의 말씀을 받습니다. 그 내용은 처음과 다름이 없습니다. 요나는 니느웨로 가서 40일 후면 이곳이 망할 것이라고 선포합니다. 그랬더니 니느웨의 왕이 그 소리를 듣고 모든 백성이 회개하라 명하고 온 백성이 그에 따라 회개하므로 하나님께서 니느웨를 멸망시키겠다는 뜻을 철회하십니다.

그러자 요나는 화가 났습니다. ‘내 이럴 줄 알았어’라고 말합니다. 요나는 ‘하나님께서 은혜롭고 자비하시며 노하기를 더디 하시기에 니느웨가 구원을 받을 것’이라는 것을 알았다고 했습니다. 그래서 자신이 니느웨로 가지 않았다고 하나님께 반항합니다. 방금 니느웨가 아닌 다시스로 가다가 죽을 뻔 했던 요나인데 다시 그것을 상기시킵니다.

요나라는 성경은 요나가 물고기 뱃속에 들어갔다 나온 것이 크게 보이지만 그 이면에는 요나가 그렇게 불순종한 이유가 있고, 그 이유는 요나 4장에서 설명됩니다. 요나는 니느웨가 구원 받는 것이 싫었습니다. 그 이유는 요나서에는 명확하게 나오지 않습니다. 하지만 니느웨가 요나의 적국인 앗수르의 수도이고, 그렇다는 것은 이방인의 구원을 바라지 않았다는 것입니다.

그러면 여기서 왜 이런 성경을 오늘 우리가 보게 된 것인지를 생각해 볼 필요가 있습니다. 실수 않으시고 완전하신 하나님께서 요나서를 오늘 우리에게 읽게 하신 것은 우리 가운데 요나와 같은 마음이 있기 때문입니다. 그것이 아니라면 오늘 우리는 성경 요나를 읽을 이유가 없을 것입니다. 

천지를 만드신 하나님께서 겨우 물고기를 보내서 사람을 삼켰다고 또 육지에 뱉어내게 하실 수 있다는 정도를 보이시려고 하늘을 두루마리 삼아도 다 쓰지 못할 하나님의 일을 기록한 성경의 일부가 되게 하신 것을 아닐 것이기 때문입니다. 한 마디로 오늘 우리도 요나와 같은 마음을 가지고 있다는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 구원에 대하여 이래라 저래라 하는 마음이 있다는 것입니다. 

요나는 하나님께서 주님이 되신다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 하나님께서 구원하시고자 한다면 니느웨의 백성들도 구원할 것이라는 것을 알았습니다. 그것을 몰랐거나, ‘하나님이 그런다고 니느웨가 회개하겠어?’라는 의심이 있었다면 불순종할 일도 없었을 것입니다. 요나는 하나님이 니느웨를 구원하신 것을 알았습니다. 다만 아니 그렇기 때문에 자신이 원하지 않는 것을 행하실 하나님을 피한 것입니다. 하나님의 능력은 자신을 위하여, 자기가 원하는 대로 나타나야 한다고 생각한 것입니다.

요나의 바로 이런 마음이 오늘 우리에게도 있다는 것입니다. 하나님께서 구원의 주님이 되신다는 것을 알기에 오히려 자신이 원치 않는 구원이 있지 않았으면 하는 바람을 가지고 있다는 것입니다. 언뜻 생각하면 ‘어떤 사람이 감히 하나님께 그렇게 말하는가?’ 싶겠지만 알고 보면 사람들이 얼마나 요나와 같은 생각을 하는지 놀랄 것입니다.

쉬운 예로 생각해 보겠습니다. 오늘날 한국이란 나라의 정치적 상황으로 한 번 본다면, 보수와 진보 양단에 있는 신앙인들이 나라를 위한 기도를 하면 당연히 자신이 지지하는 정권이 들어서기를 기도할 것이고, 그것이 하나님의 뜻이라고 우길 것입니다. 그것은 애국하는 것 같으나 실상은 요나와 같은 마음입니다. 자기가 원하는 것이 이루어져야 한다는 것입니다.

요나는 이것을 논쟁하고 있는 것입니다. 요나가 생각할 때 하나님의 구원은 하나님의 백성에게 집중되어야 한다고 주장하는 것입니다. 이는 요나는 자신을 기준으로 하나님을 믿는 모습을 보인 것입니다. 이것에 대하여 하나님께서는 그것이 아니라고 말씀을 하고 있는 것입니다.

우리는 요나가 성경에 기록되어 있기 때문에 요나의 태도를 ‘그러면 안 되는 것’으로 쉽게 인정합니다. 하지만 우리의 일상에서는 그렇지 않습니다. 사람들은 자신들이 가진 여러 가지 기준으로 하나님의 말씀을 해부하고, 끼워 맞추려 합니다. 철학적으로 성경에 접근하는 사람, 과학적으로 접근하는 사람, 그리고 아주 안 좋은 경우로 신학적으로 접근하는 사람들이 그것입니다. 자기가 가진 기준 안에 하나님의 말씀을 끼워 넣으려하고, 자기가 가진 색으로 성경을 보려 합니다.

그렇다보니 이해할 수 없는 일들이 많이 일어납니다. ‘왜 선악과를 만들어서 이런 난리가 나게 했을까?’, ‘자유의지는 뭐야?’, ‘하나님 앞에서는 인간의 존엄성 같은 것은 없는 거야?’와 같은 이야기들을 합니다. 모두 의문스럽기에 의문스러워하는 모든 이들의 생각의 수만큼의 이론이 존재하게 됩니다. 

여기서 역설적인 질문을 던져볼까 합니다. “하나님이 보실 때 성경의 어떤 부분이 어려울까?” 라는 것입니다. 아마 그렇지 않을 것입니다. 하나님은 성경을 기록하신 분이니 하나님께서 성경을 기록할 때 가지신 의와 뜻이 있으실 것입니다. 그 의와 뜻을 가지고 성경을 보시면 전혀 어렵지 않을 것입니다.

그러면 어떻습니까? 사람이 성경의 어떤 말씀이 어렵다는 것은 하나님께 문제가 있는 것입니까? 그것이 사람의 논쟁으로 답을 얻을 수 있는 것입니까? 다수결로 해결되는 것입니까? 그 어느 것도 아닙니다. 우리 자신이 성경이 어렵게 느껴진다면 그것은 우리의 안목과 의와 뜻이 하나님과 다르기 때문일 뿐입니다. 하나님과 의와 뜻이 같은데 하나님의 의와 뜻으로 기록한 성경이 어떻게 어려울 수 있겠습니까?

그러므로 요나가 하나님의 행하심이 못마땅했던 이유는 다른 것이 아니라 요나의 생각과 하나님의 생각이 달랐던 것 그 하나인 것입니다. 그리고 그와 같이 오늘 많은 사람들이 성경을 두고 의문스럽게 여기고 연구한답시고 통일되지 않는 이론을 쏟아내는 것 역시 요나와 같이 하나님과 그 생각이 다르기 때문인 것입니다.

그런 요나에게 하나님께서는 박 넝쿨을 가지고 교훈하시고 설명하십니다. 박 넝쿨로 하나님께서 요나에게 그늘을 만들어 평안케 하셨다가 그것을 또한 말라 죽게 하시니 요나가 화를 냅니다. 그러자 하나님께서는 요나에게 “네가 조성하지 않은 것으로 왜 화를 내냐?”고 하십니다. 하나님의 이 질문은 다른 것이 아닙니다. 하나님이 만드신 세상에 대하여 너희가 무엇이기에 맘대로 뜻을 주장하느냐고 물으시는 것입니다.

요나는 이솝우화에 나오는 것 같이 자신은 여우고 하나님은 자신을 따라 다니는 호랑이가 되기를 바란 것과 같습니다. 그리고 지금도 많은 사람들이 요나와 같은 마음을 가지고 있습니다. 자신이 하나님을 믿으니 하나님께서는 자신의 모든 것을 들어 주셔야 하는 분으로 여긴다는 것입니다. 그래서 자기 기준으로 기도하는 것입니다. 자기 삶의 형편에서 자신에게 유익되는 것에 대하여만 하나님께 복을 비는 것이 그것입니다. 

하지만 잊지 말아야 하는 것은 나에게 해가 되는 것 역시 하나님 앞에서는 같은 존재라는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 볼 때 악하게 보이는 것을 통해서도 하나님의 성품을 드러낼 수 있다면 개의치 않으시는 것입니다. 니느웨가 이방 나라지만 하나님을 두려워하고 회개하는 것으로 하나님의 영광이 나타난다는데, 비록 하나님의 백성이라는 나라의 사람이 니느웨가 적국이란 이유로 구원을 선포하지 않는 것과 같은 마음을 가지지 말라는 것입니다. 이것은 오늘 우리 모두에게 하시는 말씀인 것입니다.

왜냐하면 나에게 유익이 되는 작은 박 넝쿨 하나도 내가 조성하지 않았기 때문입니다. 다시 말해서 내게 유익되는 것이나 반대로 내게 해가 되는 것이라고 해도 하나님께서 다 필요로 해서 만드시고 경영하시는 것이라는 것을 알아야 하는 것입니다. 그것을 안다는 것은 곧 하나님과 같은 안목과 마음을 가진 것입니다. 그렇게 보면 하나님의 마음을 가졌다는 것, 그래서 하나님의 성품을 표현해 낸다는 것, 그것이 그리스도의 본성이고, 육신을 가진 우리 인생의 존재 목적이기도 한 것입니다.

(Jonah 2: 10-4: 11) Jonah disputes with God

Jonah, who came to the land from a fish ship, receives God's Word again. The contents are the same as the first. Jonah goes to Nineveh and proclaims that this place will be destroyed in 40 days. And when the king of Nineveh heard the voice, and all the people commanded to repent, and all the people repented accordingly, God withdraws the intention of destroying Nineveh.

Then Jonah was angry. 'I knew it was me'. Jonah said that he knew that Nineveh would be saved because God was gracious and merciful and slow to anger. So I rebel against God that he did not go to Nineveh. It is Jonah who had almost died, but not Jonah, but Jonah.

The Bible says that Jonah went into the stomach of the fish, but the reason behind it was that Jonah was so disobedient, which is explained in Jonah 4. Jonah did not want Nineveh to be saved. The reason is not clear in Jonah. But Nineveh is the capital of Assyria, the enemy of Jonah, and that means that he did not want to save the Gentiles.

Then we need to think about why we came to see this Bible today. It is because there is a mind like Jonah among us that God, who is not mistaken and who is perfect, has read Jonah today to us. If not, today we will have no reason to read the Bible Jonah.

This is because God, who made heaven and earth, will not be part of the Bible that records the work of God, which he can not use, even if he had scrolled the sky to show that he had sent a fish and swallowed man and spit it out on land. In a word, we have a heart like Jonah today. We have a heart that says to do this about God's salvation.

Jonah knew that God was Lord. So I knew that God would save Nineveh's people if they wanted to save. If we did not know it, or if there was a doubt that Nineveh would repent that God was, there would be no disobedience. Jonah knew that God had saved Nineveh. It is not, however, that you have escaped the God who will do what you do not want. God's power is to think for himself or herself to be what he wants.

This is the very heart of Jonah that we have today. He knows that God is the Lord of salvation, so he has a desire not to have salvation he does not want. At first glance, someone would say, "How dare you speak to God?" But if you know, you will be surprised at how much people think like Jonah.

Let's think of it as an easy example. Today, when you look at the political situation of Korea, you will pray that believers in both conservative and progressive nations pray for the country, of course, to have a regime that they support, and that it is God's will. It seems like patriotism, but it is a heart like Jonah. What you want to do is to be done.

Jonah is arguing about this. When Jonah thinks that God's salvation is to be concentrated on the people of God. This shows that Jonah believes in God on his own. This is what God is saying about it.

We readily acknowledge Jonah's attitude as 'not to do' because Jonah is recorded in the Bible. But not in our daily lives. People try to dissect and fit God's Word on the basis of their own standards. Those who approach the Bible philosophically, those who approach it scientifically, and those who approach theology the very worst. He wants to put the Word of God in his own standards and to see the Bible in his own color.

So, there are many things that I can not understand. 'Why did you make such a fuss by making good and bad things?', 'What is freedom?', And 'Is there no such thing as human dignity before God?' There are as many theories as there are people who are questionable because of all doubts.

Let me ask a paradoxical question here. "What part of the Bible is difficult when God sees it?" Probably not. God is the recorder of the Bible and will have the will and will of God to record the Bible. It will not be difficult to see the Bible with his and his will.

How about that? Is it difficult for a person to say something difficult in the Bible? Is it possible to get an answer from a man's argument? Is it solved by a majority vote? Nothing. Therefore, the reason why Jonah was displeased with God's doing is not the other, but Jonah's thoughts and God's thoughts were different. And as such, today many people are questioning the Bible and pouring out a theory that has been studied and ununified. This is because Jonah and his thoughts are different.

To such Jonah, God teaches and explains with a vine. God made Jonah a shade by a gourd, and he made it shine and healed it. Then God said to Jonah, "Why are you angry because you have not created it?" This question of God is no different. You ask about what you are about the world that God has made, and you are asking what you want.

Jonah is like a fable in Aesop's fable, and he wants to be a fox and God to be a tiger that follows him. And now many people have the same mind as Jonah. He believes in God, and God regards him as one who should listen to everything. That is why we pray on our own standards. It is to bless God only for what is beneficial to him in his own life.

But it should not be forgotten that what is harming me is also the same thing before God. God does not care if we can reveal God's character through what looks evil as we see it. Nineveh is a nations kingdom, but the glory of God is manifested by God's fear and repentance, so that no one in the kingdom of God's people should have the same heart that Nineveh does not declare salvation because it is the enemy. This is what we say to all of us today.

Because I did not create any small gourd that would be beneficial to me. In other words, you need to know that even if it is beneficial to me, or conversely, it is harmful to me, it is what God needs and builds and manages. To know it is to have the same mind and heart as God. That is to say that we have the heart of God, that we express God's character, that is the nature of Christ, and the purpose of our life with our flesh.
